Theme: Be Thankful For Mercy

Text: Ps 103:8‑12

8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious,

slow to anger, abounding in love.

9 He will not always accuse,

nor will he harbor his anger forever;

10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve

or repay us according to our iniquities.

11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

so great is his love for those who fear him;

12 as far as the east is from the west,

so far has he removed our transgressions from us. NIV

 

Hastings: November 6, 2011

Introduction: This month is the month we celebrate Thanksgiving. As we get near Thanksgiving, I want to remind you of blessings and promises and responsibilities concerning giving Thanks.

I do want to remind that God does instruct us to be thankful throughout the year.

 

Eph 5:19‑20

19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV

 

One of the blessings we have been given is mercy.

 

Mercy according to the dictionary: compassion or forgiveness shown towards an enemy or offender in one's power.

 

One interesting fact about mercy, is that you cannot have mercy unless you have been offended or sinned against. In other words, if a person is your friend and he treats you great, you don’t have to have mercy on him. But if someone does something against you, that is when you have opportunity for mercy. The people of the world will punch the offender, while the Christian will choose to have mercy. Not strike back.

            In the case of God, we all have sinned against Him.

Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, NIV

            So we all deserved death. But God has offered us eternal life.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. NIV

            That is the ultimate mercy. To offer us something we do not deserve.

 

On a daily basis we are offered mercy…

 

I think of how each of us needs mercy on a daily basis, there is not one of us who go through a day without sinning.

 

We are given mercy every morning...

Lam 3:22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. NIV

 

I appreciate how God does not keep track of how many sins we have committed previously.

Ps 130:2 O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.

3 If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

4 But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared. NIV

 


God has an incredible memory, but he chooses not to remember our sins of yesterday. God demonstrates an incredible love for imperfect people.

 

When Apostle Paul writes about love, he mentions how love agape love does not keep a record of wrongs.

1 Cor 13:4‑7

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self‑seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. NIV

 

Agape love is a special love, a love that contains mercy.

 

Imagine if God treated each one of us like we deserved to be treated...

If we would be treated like we treat others.

God is able to treat us individually as we do not deserve.

 

Proposition: Examples of Mercy given...

 

1. Woman Caught in Adultery...

This woman was guilty, under the Old Testament law, she was to be stoned to death. Under the Roman law, the Jews could not kill another person. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees thought they had Jesus trapped, without really no care or concern for the woman caught in adultery. They were out to get Jesus. But really they were hurting two people, they were hurting the woman who was sinning and Jesus. They were not out to get the man who committed adultery, only the woman and Jesus.

 

John 8:1‑11

8:1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.


But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."  8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"

11 "No one, sir," she said.

"Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin ." NIV

 

We can learn many things from this example of Jesus incredible mercy. We can learn that Jesus was not condoning or hiding this woman’s sin. He was giving her mercy. When he asked the woman where are the people who accused you. Jesus told her, “Go now and leave your life of sin.”.

Each of those who accused this woman, who was guilty, understood from Jesus illustration that they too had sin in their life and should get their lives right with God.

Mercy can humble us in away no other action can. The hard hearted teachers of the law and Pharisees thought their plan to trap Jesus was fool proof, but they forgot to look in the mirror. Their lives were not fool proof.

Jesus wants us to show mercy to others as he showed mercy to the woman caught in adultery. He also wants us to look in the mirror and get our own life fixed up and acknowledge we too need mercy too.

 

The Woman who was caught in adultery was guilty, and was going to be given Justice according to the Pharisees and the teachers of the law.

But what did she need? She needed mercy and that is what Jesus gave her.

Now let us look at the scriptures we looked at this morning...

 

We are given mercy every morning...

Lam 3:22‑23

Apostle Paul…

 

1 Tim 1:15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners-of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. NIV

 

How bad was Apostle Paul before he became a Christian?

He gave approval for the death of  Holy Spirit filled Christian.

Acts 7:57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." 60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he fell asleep. Acts 8

8:1 And Saul was there, giving approval to his death. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. 2 Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. 3 But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off men and women and put them in prison. NIV

 

If a person falsely accused or sided with a crowd, they would be held by God.

Ex 23:1 "Do not spread false reports. Do not help a wicked man by being a malicious witness.

2 "Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd, 3 and do not show favoritism to a poor man in his lawsuit.

4 "If you come across your enemy's ox or donkey wandering off, be sure to take it back to him. 5 If you see the donkey of someone who hates you fallen down under its load, do not leave it there; be sure you help him with it.

6 "Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits. 7 Have nothing to do with a false charge and do not put an innocent or honest person to death, for I will not acquit the guilty.

NIV

 

Saul was guilty of this…

 

If Justice was done, Saul would have been killed for killing an honest person.

 

Deut 19:18 The judges must make a thorough investigation, and if the witness proves to be a liar, giving false testimony against his brother, 19 then do to him as he intended to do to his brother. You must purge the evil from among you. 20 The rest of the people will hear of this and be afraid, and never again will such an evil thing be done among you. 21 Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. NIV

 

Saul was breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples…

 

Acts 9:1 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?"  NIV

 

God does not allow us to breath murderous threats to anyone!

King David prayed about this…

Ps 27:11 Teach me your way, O LORD; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. 12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me,

breathing out violence. NIV

 

What did Saul deserve?

Those who murder will be sent to the fiery lake of burning sulfur.

Rev 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars-their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." NIV

 

1 Tim 1:13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. NIV

What were these sins carrying as punishment?

 

Saul was a blasphemer…

He spoke evil of Jesus Christ. What is the punishment for that?

If a person does not believe, he will be condemned.

Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. NIV

 

Saul was a persecutor…

1 Cor 3:17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple. NIV

 

Saul was a violent man…

Prov 6:16 There are six things the LORD hates,

seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes,

a lying tongue,hands that shed innocent blood,

18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,

feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies

and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. NIV

 

2 Thess 1:6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you 7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power 10 on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you. NIV

 

He deserved eternal punishment.

Acts 22:12 "A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. 13 He stood beside me and said, 'Brother Saul, receive your sight!' And at that very moment I was able to see him.

 

14 "Then he said: 'The God of our fathers has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth. 15 You will be his witness to all men of what you have seen and heard. 16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.' NIV

 

 

Let us look at two sons of Zebedee.

 

James and John sons of Zebedee...

James and John were brothers who were godly men of God who were specially chosen to do God’s will.

 

James and John were brothers who were fishermen, who followed Jesus at a moments notice.

 

Matt 4:21‑22

21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee , preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. NIV

 

They were very close to Jesus. In fact John was the one that Jesus loved. He was Jesus best friend.

 

Matt26:36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."  37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." NIV

 

Mark 10:35‑41

35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee , came to him. "Teacher," they said, "we want you to do for us whatever we ask."

36 "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked.

37 They replied, "Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory."

38 "You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said. "Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?"

39 "We can," they answered.

Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared."

41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. NIV

 

But they had a slight problem, in fact it earned them a nick name. Sons of Thunder. They needed to learn how to show a little mercy on others.

Mark 3:16‑19

16 These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17 James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder ); 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. NIV

 

Here is an example of James and John with Jesus...

Luke 9:51‑56

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?" 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them, 56 and they went to another village. NIV

 

We can learn from mercy, is that what people deserve and what get may be two different things. The Samaritans rejected Jesus Christ, that upset James and John. Jesus was the Lord and Christ, He should not be rejected. Those who reject Jesus here on earth, will be rejected on the judgment day. But Jesus wanted James and John to show a little mercy. Who knows, this Samaritan village may not have been ready just yet, but later, may have become Christians later. If they would have called fire down from heaven, the Samaritans would not have had a chance later to become Christians.

 

John was not only close to Jesus, since he knew the High Priest. He was able to go into the high priest’s courtyard to stay close to Jesus.


John 18:15‑16

15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard, 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there and brought Peter in. NIV

 

His love and loyalty to Jesus was incredible. Yes, earlier in his relationship with Jesus, he and his brother James were selfish and even unmerciful, but he quickly developed into a loyal disciple of Jesus Christ.

 

A person’s real character always comes out under the most stress. And when Jesus was on the cross, who was near the cross? It was John the son of Zebedee. The one who at one time wanted to be the greatest, who at one time was unmerciful to the Samaritans.

 

But we have to be reminded that God is a God who does not keep a record of our sins.

Ps 130:2‑4

So when Jesus was on the cross, looking for someone to take care of His precious Mother Mary. Who was there? All the other Apostles were too far to talk to. John was nearby.

Mary was going to be in need of help. She was getting older, Joseph probably had died. She may even have needed extra care of an elderly person.

Could John the unmerciful one, one of the sons of thunder be trusted? Jesus did not keep a record of the sin, he was merciful. And gave John the opportunity to take care of His mother Mary.

 

John 19:25‑27

25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son,"  27 and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. NIV

 

[1.] This was an honour put upon John, and a testimony both to his prudence and to his fidelity. If he who knows all things had not known that John loved him, he would not have made him his mother's guardian. It is a great honour to be employed for Christ, and to be entrusted with any of his interest in the world. But,

 


[2.] It would be a care and some charge to John; but he cheerfully accepted it, and took her to his own home, not objecting the trouble nor expense, nor his obligations to his own family, nor the ill‑will he might contract by it. Note, Those that truly love Christ, and are beloved of him, will be glad of an opportunity to do any service to him or his. Nicephoras's Eccl. Hist. lib. 2 cap. 3, saith that the Mary lived with John at Jerusalem eleven years, and then died. Others, that she lived to remove with him to Ephesus.

Sometimes Mercy is given to those who ask for it....

2 Kings 1:1‑15

1:1 After Ahab's death, Moab rebelled against Israel. 2 Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers, saying to them, "Go and consult Baal‑Zebub, the god of Ekron, to see if I will recover from this injury."

3 But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, "Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, 'Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult Baal‑Zebub, the god of Ekron?' 4 Therefore this is what the LORD says: 'You will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!'" So Elijah went.

5 When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them, "Why have you come back?"

6 "A man came to meet us," they replied. "And he said to us, 'Go back to the king who sent you and tell him, "This is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending men to consult Baal‑Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!" '" 

7 The king asked them, "What kind of man was it who came to meet you and told you this?"

8 They replied, "He was a man with a garment of hair and with a leather belt around his waist."

The king said, "That was Elijah the Tishbite."

9 Then he sent to Elijah a captain with his company of fifty men. The captain went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, "Man of God, the king says, 'Come down!'"

10 Elijah answered the captain, "If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!" Then fire fell from heaven and consumed the captain and his men.

11 At this the king sent to Elijah another captain with his fifty men. The captain said to him, "Man of God, this is what the king says, 'Come down at once!'"

12 "If I am a man of God," Elijah replied, "may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!" Then the fire of God fell from heaven and consumed him and his fifty men.

13 So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. This third captain went up and fell on his knees before Elijah. "Man of God," he begged, "please have respect for my life and the lives of these fifty men, your servants! 14 See, fire has fallen from heaven and consumed the first two captains and all their men. But now have respect for my life!"

15 The angel of the LORD said to Elijah, "Go down with him; do not be afraid of him." So Elijah got up and went down with him to the king. NIV

 

Sometimes Mercy is given to those who do not ask for it...

1 Sam 24

24:1 After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, "David is in the Desert of En Gedi." 2 So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats.


3 He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. 4 The men said, "This is the day the LORD spoke of when he said to you, 'I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.'" Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul's robe.

5 Afterward, David was conscience‑stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. 6 He said to his men, "The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD's anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the LORD." 7 With these words David rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.

8 Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, "My lord the king!" When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. 9 He said to Saul, "Why do you listen when men say, 'David is bent on harming you'? 10 This day you have seen with your own eyes how the LORD delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, 'I will not lift my hand against my master, because he is the LORD's anointed.' 11 See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. Now understand and recognize that I am not guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life. 12 May the LORD judge between you and me. And may the LORD avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you. 13 As the old saying goes, 'From evildoers come evil deeds,' so my hand will not touch you.

14 "Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea? 15 May the LORD be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand."

16 When David finished saying this, Saul asked, "Is that your voice, David my son?" And he wept aloud. 17 "You are more righteous than I," he said. "You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly. 18 You have just now told me of the good you did to me; the LORD delivered me into your hands, but you did not kill me. 19 When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the LORD reward you well for the way you treated me today. 20 I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands. 21 Now swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father's family."

22 So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold. NIV

 

Conclusion: Matt 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. NIV

 

 

 

 

Theme: Importance Of Baptism

Hastings Morning- July 24, 2011

Often people ask the question 'why should I get baptized?', and 'what is so important about baptism? These are very important questions, and I would like to answer them using the Holy Word of God to answer questions about baptism.

 

We imitate the method that is presented in the bible.

 

Matt 3:13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"

15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized , he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." NIV

 

In the example of Jesus’ baptism. He went down into the water with John the baptizer and after Jesus came up out of the water God said “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

 

In the book of Acts is another example of baptism.

Acts 8:38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. NIV

 

I. WHY SHOULD I GET BAPTIZED?

Jesus Christ wants us to obey Him.

Matt 7:21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (NIV)

 

We want to obey Him, Jesus deserves our obedience, He sacrificed Himself for our sins.

 

John 14:15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command. (NIV)

 

1. We will be baptized to obey Jesus Christ' commandment.

 

Matt 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19            Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."" (NIV)

 

Mark 16:15 He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (NIV)

 

This was not a man-made commandment it was given by Jesus to the Apostles, to start the Church. Would it be right for the Apostles or even us to disobey His commandment?

 

Jesus Christ said whoever believes and is baptized will be saved. When we are baptized into Christ we are saved.

 

2. We are baptized to receive the forgiveness of sins as the Holy Spirit guided Apostles told us.

Acts 2:36-38

36        "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."

37        When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"

38        Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.


Apostle Peter on the day of Pentecost, began the church, by preaching a convicting sermon. In this sermon, he convicted the crowd of murdering Jesus Christ, because of this they wanted to know what to do to get rid of their guilt. Peter then replied ARepent and be baptized, everyone of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.@

 

Because of his sermon, many of the crowd obeyed the command.

 

Acts 2:40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." 41           Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. (NIV)

 

Apostle Paul in his testimony to the crowd of Jews he repeated what Ananias said to him.

 

Acts 22:16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.' (NIV)

 

Ananias told him to be baptized and wash your sins away. Without baptism, Paul wouldn't have had his sins washed away.

 

3. We are baptized so that we may be clothed with Jesus Christ.

Gal 3:27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. (NIV)

 

The Greek Word for clothed, actually means to put on Jesus Christ.

 

Before baptism we are not clothed with Jesus Christ. Salvation is found in no other. We need Christ for salvation.

 

Acts 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." (NIV)

 

4. We are baptized so that when we stand before the judgment we have a lawyer to stand in our place.

 

I Jn 2:1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense-- Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. (NIV)

 

5. We are baptized so we will be part of God’s church.

 1 Cor 12:13    For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body-- whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free-- and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. (NIV)

 

When a person is baptized they are baptized by one Spirit (Holy Spirit) into one body (church).

 

1 Cor 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28And in the church God ... (NIV)

This was written to people who were already baptized believers, Apostle Paul uses the word body and church as one in the same.

 

In Acts 2:47 God is the one who adds people to the church, not humans.

 

Acts 2:41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. (NIV)

 

6. When we are baptized we receive the Holy Spirit into our lives.

 

Acts 2:38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (NIV)

 

When a person repents of all his sins, and is baptized he receives the benefits for obedience mentioned here. Forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. We need the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit is what bears fruit in us.

 

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. (NIV)

 

The Holy Spirit is who helps us pray.

 

Rom 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will. (NIV)

 

Without the Holy Spirit we will not go to Heaven.


John 3:5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. (NIV)

 

7.  When we are baptized we become a new person, we have a new life.

Rom 6:4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. (NIV)

 

8.  When we are baptized we receive a good conscience before God.

1 Pet 3:21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also-- not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, (NIV)

Introduction: Tiger Woods won the British Open 6 years ago, he won it by 5 strokes, which in golf is an incredible margin of victory. He led the British Open from start to finish. Tiger has 14 majors now, which means he trails Jack Nicklaus by 4.

What is a major? A major is like the World Series to Baseball, or the Superbowl is to Football, or the Finals is to Basketball. The only difference is it is an individual sport.

Golf is so much more difficult than any other sport, because they change the course to make it harder for the golfers.

 

In the World Series, Superbowl and the Finals the dimensions are always the same. In Baseball the pitcher always throws toward the batter from the pitchers plate at a distance of 60 feet 6 inches. In Basketball the basketball hoop is always 10 feet high. In Football it is always 10 yards for a first down. But in golf each golf course is different. And those in charge of the tournament can make course adjustments to their golf course by the year. Different pin placement, the rough could by longer, they could add a sand trap here or there, they could make a hole longer.

 

For example on hole #14 it is a 618 yard par 5. That means they allow you to hit the ball 5 times to get into the hole for a par.

How far is that? It is 1854 feet. That is hitting a golf ball 4 and 2 baseball fields (400ft or 133.3yds away. Or over six 100 yard football fields (300ft  by 160ft or 100yds by 53.3yds) away. Or 19.7 basketball courts (94ft by 50ft wide or 31.3yds by 16.6yds) away.                                       

Besides the dimensions of the golf course always changing, where you hit it from may be different, it may be from the sand, it may be from the rough and some of the grass on the rough is pretty long. Besides your lie, which is where the ball is sitting, you may be hitting from uneven ground, sometimes you are higher than the ball, sometimes you are lower than the ball, sometimes you are hitting from behind a tree, other times you may be hitting from underneath a bush.

 

How does a champion golfer do it?


Discipline- a champion practices for hours, after a round of golf, he will practice for hours, trying to shape his shots, working on his swing.

Determination- Champion golfers have to have an insane desire for winning. They have to work through their injuries, they have to desire winning.

Talent- Not everyone can do everything he does with discipline and determination. God gives the champion golfer the ability that is very rare in a human being.

 

So how does this help us to live victoriously?

The principles of a champion golfer are bible principles.

 

1. Discipline...

 

Tom Landry the former famous football coach of the Dallas Cowboys once said...

 

The job of a football coach is to make men do what they don't want to do, in order to achieve what they've always wanted to be. 

Tom Landry.

 

No one wants to be disciplined, because it takes lots of effort, it takes a lot of work on our part.

 

But Apostle Paul tells us how we must be disciplined, we must have total control of ourselves, we should be working hard for the Lord.

Our bible reading tells us why the Israelites had to walk around in the desert for 40 years.

 

Num 32:11'Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly , not one of the men twenty years old or more who came up out of Egypt will see the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob —  12 not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly .' NIV

 

In order for the Christian to live a life of victory he will have to serve God wholeheartedly.

 

1 Cor 9:24‑27

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27 No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. NIV

 

In verse 27 Apostle Paul says he beat his body and made it his slave so he would not be disqualified for the prize. What prize? the prize of heaven.

 

How many times have we went through our Christian life with no rhyme or reason, we have forgotten, why we are Christians, we have forgotten about eternity, we end up losing our disciplined life, and in turn returned to a disastrous defeated life.

1 Cor 9:27

[And bring it into subjection] doulagoogoo (NT:1396). This word properly means, to reduce to servitude or slavery; and probably was usually applied to the act of subduing an enemy, and leading him captive from the field of battle; as the captives in war were regarded as slaves. It then means, effectually and totally to subdue, to conquer, to reduce to bondage and subjection. Paul means by it, the purpose to obtain a complete VICTORY over his corrupt passions and propensities, and a design to gain the mastery over all his natural and evil inclinations.

When an enemy would take captives into slavery, the captives had no say in where they were to go, or what they wanted.

The difference here is we are becoming slaves to God, who commands us to live according to his commands for our own good. He knows what is right, whether or not we understand, his commands are for our own good. We must take a hold of our bodies and become obedient to God Almighty.

 

We must be willing to bring our own bodies and attitudes in subjection to Jesus Christ.

Imagine if Apostle Paul had to be disciplined, imagine what we have to do. Apostle Paul understood, even though he was an Apostle, he could still fall.

 

One of the ways we can stay disciplined is to remember others are counting on you.

Apostle Paul expresses the necessity of being disciplined, because what a shame it would be if he taught others about Jesus Christ, only to lose his soul.

1 Cor 9:27 No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. NIV

 

1 Cor 6:9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were . But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Today=s world is full of these wicked sins, which will cause us to lose our eternal salvation. Is it worth it? Is it worth a little fun, a little pleasure?

One thing about it, is if we live like this we will not make heaven. But if he choose to come back from these sins, often there are consequences that come from years of living in sin. And living a godly disciplined life will keep you from the consequences of the sin.

 


For example a person who messes with sexual immorality while they are young, may end up with an unwanted pregnancy. Most of the time, the parents of that child do not get married and are split up. So now the consequence is you are giving your child a one parent family. You will have to raise it alone. When you could have been disciplined and waited until marriage, make a good spiritual decision on who that special person is, and raise children in a godly environment.

You see the sins were forgiven, when a person is baptized into Christ, but the consequence of living ungodly makes life difficult.

 

Here is another example, if a person becomes a thief and is caught, he or she will be punished and then ends up with a record. Now the person can become a Christian and be baptized and have all his sins forgiven, but the fact he has a record and has to do time or has to be punished, will haunt him. He can work around it, but it is so much better not to have to mess with the baggage that comes from sin.        

 

Being a disciplined person will prevent a lot of heartache and consequences. The heartaches and consequences sometimes are suffered by the undisciplined persons family. If they have to go to prison, the family will miss them, and suffers because of the sinful person. It is a far better choice to be disciplined now, than be forgiven and still suffer the consequences of sin.

 

2. Determination...

Besides discipline in order to keep the discipline going, you must have determination.

 

Determination when others quit... One of the most disappointing things in a Christian=s life, is when someone quits their Christian life. It may be a close friend, it may be one who led you to the Lord, it may be a family member, or a parent and sometimes even a preacher or leader in the church. But this is where your personal relationship with Jesus Christ must grow stronger. You must understand that all along it is your personal relationship with Jesus Christ. What they do and what they chose should not and will not cause you to lose your faith in Jesus Christ.

 

John 6:60‑69

60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?"

61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you? 62 What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him."  66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. 67 "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve. 68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God." NIV

 

Apostle Paul had to deal with a special friend who left the Lord...

About 60 A.D. Apostle Paul had some high regards for Demas and tells the church in Colossee. They had an excellent relationship.

 


Col 4:14 Our dear friend Luke, the doctor, and Demas send greetings. NIV

 

About 62 A.D. Apostle Paul tells Philemon how that Demas was a fellow worker along with Mark and Luke.

 

Philem 24 And so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, my fellow workers. NIV

 

But by 65 A.D. Only 5 years later, Apostle Paul tells the sad news to Timothy, how that Demas got caught up in the world, and had deserted him.

2 Tim 4:9 Do your best to come to me quickly, 10 for Demas , because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry. NIV

 

How disappointed that must have been! How discouraging, but that was not going to get Apostle Paul down, he was not going to quit.

 

2 Tim 4:6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day‑and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

He was focused on God, he was determined to serve God till the end.

 

Even though he did not receive the support he should have received, he was not going to lose faith in God. For he said, the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength.

 

2 Tim 4:16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. 17 But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion's mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. NIV 

Theme: I Can

Hastings Morning- July 10, 2011

 

Introduction: It is a proven fact that if a person is a positive thinker, he can do more than the one that is a negative thinker. The devil knows this and he knows that if he can have the Christian doubting and thinking negative then most of the time the Christian will not even work for the Lord. The Christian will always doubt whether or not he can overcome sin, he will doubt whether or not he can witness to others effectively. He will doubt whether he is even going to go to heaven.

 

The devil attacks our doubts and our fears, and tries to defeat us before we even get started.

 

One of the things he throws at us is being double minded. Changing our mind with a little persuasion, even though we know we are doing what is right in the first place.

 

Double minded man problem...

James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double‑minded man, unstable in all he does.

We have to becareful that we aren=t always changing our minds. We must set out to do good and continue to do it. Be persistent and you can be successful.

 

The devil comes at us with the idea of We Can=t Do It... It is too hard.

Num 13:26‑14:9


26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 They gave Moses this account: "We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan." 30 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, "We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it." 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We can't attack those people; they are stronger than we are." 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. 33 We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them."

Numbers 14

14:1 That night all the people of the community raised their voices and wept aloud. 2 All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this desert! 3 Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt?" 4 And they said to each other, "We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt." 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole Israelite assembly gathered there. 6 Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes 7 and said to the entire Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. 8 If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. 9 Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them." NIV

 

The Christian must look at whom he is serving. Joshua and Caleb were godly men, who knew the task looked impossible, but with God they knew they could do it.

When we fight a sin or temptation or discouragement, we must understand, it can seem like an impossibility but with God we can do it.

 

Let us look at an example of

 

Apostle Peter.

 

John 13:33 "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. 34           "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35      By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." 37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." 38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times! (NIV)

Apostle Peter was a man who had good intentions, he had witnessed many miracles and he was a man who was always willing to say I will, or I can.

 


Apostle Peter witnessed the calming of the seaY

Matt 8:27) The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!" (NIV)

 

Apostle Peter witnessed the raising of the deadY

John 11:43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

44  The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go."

45  Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, put their faith in him. (NIV)

 

Apostle Peter witnessed the way Jesus handled the evil intentions of his enemiesY

John 8:3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?"

6    They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7    When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." 8      Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9      At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10     Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" 11)  "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." (NIV)

 

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees were well respected religious men in their day, they were also used by the devil, to try and trap Jesus. Apostle Peter witnessed the wisdom that Jesus had by the way he handled these respected religious men.

Often we think that if we lived during the time of Christ, or if Jesus lived today, we could do a lot more.


Even though Apostle Peter witnessed, resurrecting of the dead, healing of the sick, walking across the water and superior wisdom demonstrated, Apostle Peter even though he said I Can, failed when the Jews took Jesus away.

Apostle Peter in John 13:37   Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."

He had the right attitude, but when it looked like Jesus was overpowered, when he could not see any more miracles, he lost the I Can attitude. When he did not see Jesus anymore, he failed miserably.

 

Luke 22:55-62

55        But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them.

56        A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him."

57        But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said.

58        A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied.

59        About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean."

60        Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.

61        The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times."

62        And he went outside and wept bitterly. (NIV)

 

Sometimes this is the way we get, we lose our desire and fight in us, because the devil has hidden Christ from our eyes, we have lost sight. Sometimes we are overwhelmed as Peter was when the waves splashed around him, when he was walking out to Jesus.

Peter was ready to do anything for the Lord. He was willing to fight the enemy with his sword.

 

John 18:10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.)   11  Jesus commanded Peter, "Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?" (NIV)

But when he lost sight of Christ, when the soldiers took Him away, his courage, his desire his fight was gone.


Simon Peter thought he knew what the will of God was, he was willing to fight to keep Jesus from being arrested. But when Jesus told him to put his sword away, it caused confusion, he had misunderstood all along. He thought Jesus was going to rule a physical kingdom. Sometimes we can get confused also, thinking it is God=s will to do something, and when it isn=t do we too lose our strength?

The devil is going to do that to us, he wants us to lose sight of Christ, he knows that is where we get our strength. If the devil can get our sights off of Christ, our strength will be gone, and the victory will be the devil=s.

It was God=s will that Jesus would die on the cross, it was Apostle Peter=s will that he try his best to free him from the soldiers. When Apostle Peter=s idea of God=s will did not work he was weakened, and his strength in Christ had left.

Do we have our own idea of God=s will, and since it did not happen the way we  thought it should happen, so it dampened our spirits? This is what happened to Peter.

 

Maybe the devil has taken the I Can out of us, by confusing our thoughts. Like he did to Peter. Can you imagine what went on in Apostle Peter=s mind, when he was doing what he thought was right, he pulled out his sword, and was willing to die for Christ, so Christ could have his freedom. When Jesus told him to put the sword away, he must have been confused and it definitely weakened him. Let us not let that happen to ourselves, just because we think that God should answer our prayers a certain way, or we think God should handle things a certain way, and it is different than we think it should be, let us not be weakened by the confusion. God knows what he is doing, we don=t.

 

If you think you are beaten, you are.

The winner glories in the good; the whiner majors in the mediocre.

 

Winners' thinking processes differ from other people's. As part of their normal, moment-to-moment stream of consciousness, winners think constantly in terms of I can and I will.

Losers concentrate their waking thoughts on...what they should have done...would have done...what they can't do. When the mind's self-talk is positive, performance is more likely to be successful. The huge majority of our negative doubts and fears are imaginary or beyond our control.

I. HOW CAN WE HAVE THE STRENGTH WE NEED?

 

Focus on the job that needs to be done…

Acts 2:36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" 38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off-for all whom the Lord our God will call." 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. NIV

 

Fifty days before Apostle Peter was cowering before two girls, denying Christ.

 

Matt 26:69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said. 70 But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said. 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth." NIV

Now on the day of Pentecost, the same people were in his presence, but he had the strength to speak and to share the word of God with the people.

 

Phil 4:13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength. NIV

 

 

 

 

Realize where it comes fromY

Apostle Paul in his letter to the church in Philippi, reminded them that he could do everything with Christ=s help.

Phil 4:13

13        I can do everything through him who gives me strength. (NIV)

Apostle Paul was a victorious Christian who knew from where his strength came from. He had his sights on Jesus Christ, he knew all the rotten things the devil was going to throw at him, could be overcome by counting on Jesus for strength.

 

Apostle Peter was able to walk on water, because of Jesus.

Matt 14:26-33

26        When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.

27        But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

28        "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."

29        "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

30        But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"

31        Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

32        And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.

33        Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." (NIV)


What happened when Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and looked at the wind and waves? He started drowning. The devil loves to see the Christian drown in his own doubt. Jesus was right in front of him, Jesus was there for Apostle Peter, but Peter got sidetracked. We too can become like Peter, and even though we know Jesus is always there for us, we look at our problems and think how big they are and lose sight of Jesus who is not far from us.

A lesson we can learn from this story, is by asking these questions.

Was Apostle Peter in a stable situation? We know he wasn=t, the Apostles were in a storm, there were problems all around.

Was Apostle Peter able to walk through the problems? Yes, we know he was able to walk toward Jesus.

When did Apostle Peter start to sink? When, he took his eyes off of Jesus.

Apostle Peter had the I Can attitude, until, he took his eyes of Jesus. Let us not take our eyes off of Jesus, He is our strength, He is our shield, He is our hope.

Have you been taking your eyes off of Jesus and have been putting them on the wind and the waves of temptation?

                                                           

Joseph had an I Can attitude

 

Gen 39:5‑13

5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. 6 So he left in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well‑built and handsome, 7 and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!" 8 But he refused. "With me in charge," he told her, "my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her. 11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house. 13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, NIV

 

The story of Joseph gives a good example of a godly man, being able to overcome the temptation set before him by the devil. It wasn=t a one time temptation, but it was a daily temptation, the devil was not going to quit. This is the same way it is with any temptation for us. We will be tempted daily by the devil, it doesn=t have to be the same temptation Joseph had to overcome, but whatever sin, that is appealing to you. We must be victorious over it, daily.

Verse 9 shows us, that Joseph kept his eye on God, not on the temptation. 


How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?"

Joseph lived like God was around. Sometimes we don=t live like God is around. We think we can sneek around and sin, but Joseph did not want to sin against God. He kept his eyes on God.

We can overcome if we keep our eyes on Jesus.

 

James 4:4-5

4          You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

5          Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely? (NIV)

If we serve God one moment and serve the world the next, we will never be able to be an overcomer. We have to set our eyes on Jesus. When Jesus comes back he will be looking forward to taking his faithful bride to heaven. Have we been faithful?

 

 

Conclusion: Many times we say if only Jesus were here, if we had seen the miracles he performed, if we got to spend time with Jesus, then we would be overcomers. Apostle Peter had all that and more, yet he stumbled and fell. Why? Because even though Jesus was there he took his eyes off of Jesus.

In order for us to have an I Can attitude, we must focus on Jesus, focus on him everyday. Joseph conquered the temptation of adultery, by keeping his eyes focused on God, we can overcome any temptation if we focus on Jesus.

Introduction: On Monday, we as a nation will be celebrating our 235th year of freedom. The fireworks have already been going off. The excitement of seeing the bigger fireworks on the fourth of July is building up. Probably plans are being made to spend the night of July 4th watching fireworks. But through all this activity what does it all mean? Some times we get more excited about the celebrating than we do what is the meaning of the celebrating.

We live in a great and beautiful country. God has blessed us tremendously with the wealth of the land and the incredible blend of races throughout our nation, unmatched by any nation in the world. Our nation is free from all nations, it is independent, it actually gives aid to other nations. Our nation is still the greatest. We have freedoms unheard of in the rest of the world. We need to give God the glory and praise for this.

 

1. FREEDOM IS EXPENSIVE- Anything that is worth it, will take effort and sometimes your own life.

 

Freedom is not free.

Fifty‑six men signed the Declaration of Independence. Their conviction resulted in untold sufferings for themselves and their families. Of the 56 men,

* Five were captured by the British and tortured before they died.

* Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

* Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary Army.

* Another had two sons captured.

* Nine of the fifty‑six fought and died from wounds or hardships of the war.

* Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships sunk by the British navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts and died in poverty.

* At the battle of Yorktown, the British General Cornwallis had taken over Thomas Nelson's home for his headquarters. Nelson quietly ordered General George Washington to open fire on the Nelson home. The home was destroyed and Nelson died bankrupt.

* John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their thirteen children fled for their lives. His fields and mill were destroyed. For over a year, he lived in forest and caves, returning home only to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later, he died from exhaustion.

These men who gave their lives for the freedom of this country should be honored and remembered. They did a great service, and many of those men in 1776 did not even get to enjoy the Freedom they had brought to the country. As some died before they were able to see the fruit from their effort. As the article says that one of the men lost his wife and children because of the war. One man lost his home and died bankrupt. Others lost their lives and their families. So that we could have Freedom.

 


 

Freedom is not free.

 

On the spiritual side of human history, we too were in bondage, but the end result of our bondage to sin would have been awful. Hell fire was looking at the human race. Something had to be done. It was going to be very costly, it was going to take much more than money or a physical battle.

 

Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, NIV

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. NIV

 

God loved the world and He knew that there was no better sacrifice than His one and only Son. That was the only way the debt could be paid.            

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. NIV

 

Jesus came down to earth, and not only lived here as a human being, but set a perfect example that we could follow.

Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are‑yet was without sin.  NIV

Jesus was a tremendous sacrifice. For Him to know that there is some pleasure in sin, to forsake all sin, so that we could have eternal life. As Jesus was growing up, He did not sin, when he was a teenager, he did not sin. When he was a young adult he did not sin. He was sinless.

 

He set the example of being baptized...

He not only told us to be baptized in...

Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. NIV

But he too was baptized...

Matt 3:13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" 15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."  NIV

 

He suffered daily knowing that He was going to die on the cross...

Mark 8:31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Satan!" he said. "You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."  NIV

 

Luke 9:22 And he said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life." NIV

 

Luke 22:37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." NIV

 

John 3:14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, NIV

Imagine knowing how you were going to die, and you were going to die for many who

could careless if you died. That dreaded day you would think.

When it was time to die, Jesus spent three agonizing hours in Gethsemane preparing for it. It was tough, the spirit was willing but the flesh was weak.

 

Matt 26:36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. 41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."

43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him.

50 Jesus replied, "Friend, do what you came for." NIV

By the time Judas Iscariot had arrived Jesus was ready, he was ready to pay the debt.

 

Why did Jesus do this? He did it for our freedom. Our freedom from the consequences of sin. Our freedom from the guilt of sin.


 

 

2. THE QUEST FOR FREEDOM IS URGENT!

When the early Americans were being taxed more and they were filled with the desire to have religious freedom, they could not wait, their enemy was in America, and they had to run them out.

Spiritually when people are in sin, and they are taught that they need to be freed from their sin, the quest for freedom is urgent.

If someone was locked up in Jail, they wouldn=t want to stay there, there would be sense of urgency to get out. Sin holds a person captive, and every human doesn=t want to suffer the consequences of death. Nor do they want to live in bondage to any sin. There is urgency!

 

But some do not see the need as urgent, while others do.

 

Some pursue freedom others just feel the need but don=t do anything about it.

 

Felix

Acts 24:24 Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess. He sent for Paul and listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus. 25 As Paul discoursed on righteousness, self‑control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, "That's enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you." 26 At the same time he was hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe, so he sent for him frequently and talked with him.  NIV

There is no record of Felix ever coming to the Lord. He waited past his time.

He never was freed from sin, he never did get his life right.

 

On The Day Of Pentecost Those Listening, Were Urgently Seeking For A Chance To Get Right With God...

They wanted the answer quickly, they wanted to be free from their sin.     

 

Samaritans were converted quickly...

Acts 8:5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed. 8 So there was great joy in that city. 9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, "This man is the divine power known as the Great Power." 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic. 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.  NIV

 

Acts 8:35 Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.

36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, "Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptized?"

37 Then Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." NKJV

38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 40 Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea. NIV

 

Acts 16:13 On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14 One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message. 15 When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. "If you consider me a believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us.  NIV

 

3. FREEDOM WAS WORTH IT...

When we look back at the battles that were fought and the lives which were lost, and we see what we have today in our country. We say freedom was worth it.

 

But with all the freedom we have in the United States, we are still not free from sin, unless we turn to God. The spiritual freedom He offers far outweighs what is offered in our great country.

 

Jesus Christ suffering on the cross was worth it...

 

Heb 12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. NIV

Weeping and Gnashing of teeth...


 

Matt 8:8‑12

8 The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." NIV

 

Fire...

Warns those who call others fool of the fire of Hell...

Matt 5:22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell. NIV

 

Warns those who are selfish and never give anyone anything about eternal fire.

Matt 25:40 "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.' NIV

 

Warns those who do not obey about the blazing fire...

2 Thess 1:7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. NIV

 

The Hebrew write warns those who deliberately keep on sinning about the raging fire...

Heb 10:26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. NIV

 

The burning of Sodom and Gomorrah was an example of the eternal fire.

Jude 7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire. NIV

 

Conclusion:

1. Freedom Is Expensive...


 

Many men gave their lives for the freedom of our country. Jesus God=s One and Only Son gave His life for the freedom of our sins.

2. The Quest For Freedom Is Urgent...

When George Washington and the mighty America men fought the British it was urgent. It is urgent for everyone of us to surrender our lives to Christ in baptism that we may be saved.

3. Freedom Is Worth It... All the pain and sacrifice by Jesus was worth it to us.

Introduction:

1. My Conversion...

Looking back over the years, in fact about 37 years ago, I can remember my conversion. It was a joyous occasion. What drove me to become a Christian was a number of things.

 

*One I was thinking about eternity. Where was I going to spend eternity?

Eccl 12:14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. NIV

I knew that everything I did, I was accountable for before God. I knew I was not going to sneak anything past God. I knew I wasn=t living a life pleasing to God either. I knew if I had died, in the spiritual condition I was in, I was not going to spend eternity with God. And that bothered me. I did not like that fact. I tried to put it off, but dealing with life in an honest fashion, I knew I had to face the fact someday. I knew if I would put it off too long, I maybe would never commit my life to God. I felt bad about not pleasing God for all he had done for me.

 

Rom 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. NIV

What bothered me, was why would a God so special, do something for someone so unworthy? His love drew me to him. I knew I wanted to live with a God like this for eternity. I did not want to spend eternity with someone as cruel as the devil, a liar, one who spit out  broken promises. 

 

John 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. NIV

I thought it would be wise to think of eternity, to consider my options and make a decision that would determine where I spent eternity.

 

Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. NIV

 

 


*Two I was thinking about the guilt I had in my life. I knew I was not living right before God. I was living to please self, and not God. I was in selfish living. I knew what God did for me, I knew what he had to offer, and yet I still was living the way I wanted to live.

 

Acts 2:38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. NIV

 

Guilt is a hard thing to get rid of, it is good if you use it to correct your mistake, but if you chose to let it build up in you. It is the worst thing you could have in your life.

I wanted no part of it. I wanted it gone. Having my sins forgiven was a goal of mine. To know my sins would be gone was my desire.

Through the preaching of strong powerful men of God, I was taught about how to get a good conscience toward God. They pointed out to me what Apostle Peter had to say about my conscience.

1 Peter 3:20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also‑not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand‑with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him. NIV

God=s solution to getting rid of my terrible sins and my guilty conscience was through baptism. I read these scriptures and made sure these scriptures were right, and then it was just a matter of when I would do it.

Then one day listening to the late Marion McKee who was our preacher back then, I decided I had served the devil long enough, and I wanted to serve God. I wanted to be safe in his arms. I wanted to be right with God. So I went down the aisle and told Brother Marion McKee, my decision and he talked about a lifetime commitment and how important it was. It wasn=t going to be just a commitment taken lightly. All the while I was thinking I want to be baptized, I need to be baptized. I just couldn=t wait to obey my Lord Jesus Christ. We had to drive across to Inglewood from Santa Monica, California, for we were meeting in a YWCA. And we had to go to the church in Inglewood to where Ed McSpadden preached. I was kind of numb on the way out there. I was just excited to know I was going to please God. I was going to have the guilt wiped out.


When I entered the baptistry, I was excited, because I would be obeying God. I was  excited I would have a clear conscience and my sins were forgiven. After being baptized, I felt so clean, I felt so happy, I wanted to share it with everyone around. I felt like the Ethiopian Eunuch who was baptized and went away rejoicing.

Acts 8:38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. NIV

2. The Devil=s Attempt At Knocking Out The Joy Of A Clean Heart And Conscience Before God.

1. You are different...

Apostle Peter helps me understand what other Christians go through.

1 Peter 4:3 For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do‑living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. 4 They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you.

In this case Apostle Peter says, these people used to live in these terrible sins, and when they became Christians and lived a different life, their old buddies thought it was strange, that they had changed, and because of this, they heaped abuse.

 

1 Peter 4:4 Of course, your former friends are very surprised when you no longer join them in the wicked things they do, and they say evil things about you. NLT

This may be one of the toughest persecutions to endure. For when an enemy does evil things to you, you can accept that, but when someone whom you trusted, someone whom you enjoyed company with, someone whom you chose to be a friend, turns around and does evil to you, many fall apart, and lose the joy of a clean heart and good conscience before God.

And sad to say, many chose to win their friendship back, instead of continuing a friendship and personal relationship with God.

Let us look at what Jesus says about this.

Matt 13:18 "Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. 22 The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. 23 But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown."  NIV

Jesus warned us about this, and it is reality, the devil does not want to see joy in Christians, he wants to see Christians that are always under stress and never really happy.

 

2. Sin in our life...

King Saul had fallen, and was no longer serving God. Samuel the prophet told Saul, he was going to replace him with a man after his own heart. How sad King Saul must have felt, for he was one who had been chosen by God, now, he was going to replaced, by another man.

1 Sam 13:13 "You acted foolishly," Samuel said. "You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. 14 But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the LORD's command." NIV

This young man was excited about God and had a true love for God.

When Samuel went to chose him from Jesses= sons, Samuel could not tell, who it was by sight, for it is of the heart, in which God chooses.

1 Sam 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, "The LORD has not chosen this one either." 9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, "Nor has the LORD chosen this one." 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, "The LORD has not chosen these." 11 So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered, "but he is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives." 12 So he sent and had him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; he is the one." NIV

 

David was chosen by God, to replace King Saul, this was before fought Goliath. David must had been on cloud nine, after being annointed King. When Goliath was making fun of God=s people and of God. David could stand for it no longer, and he challenged him and with the help of God, he killed Goliath. He was given a lot of attention after that. And King Saul, became jealous. And though David married his daughter, he still tried to kill David. David had to run for his life, even though, he was the future crowned King. How that must have discouraged him, to know he was to be the future King, yet be chase all over the kingdom and to even the enemies kingdom.

After Saul was killed during a battle with the Philistines, David became the King. Everything would be great, life would be great, but then came along a temptation, that David would yield to.

Theme: It Is Going To Take Effort To Live For God...

Introduction: NEW YORK (AP) -- His face twisted in pain, Lance Armstrong virtually walked the last couple of steps. He slowed to a halt immediately after the finish line and bent to the ground, his green shirt soaked with sweat.

No one's more familiar with how painful achieving goals can be.

Still, not even he saw this coming.

Armstrong barely met his lofty goal of breaking 3 hours in his first marathon, but it came at a price. No Alpine climb on his bicycle had ever been as tough as Sunday's New York City Marathon, he said.

"For the level of condition that I have now, that was without a doubt the hardest physical thing I have ever done," said Armstrong, who finished 856th. "I never felt a point where I hit the wall, it was really a gradual progression of fatigue and soreness."

Armstrong's time was 2 hours, 59 minutes and 36 seconds. Afterward, he shuffled into a post-race news conference, his right shin heavily taped.

"I think I bit off more than I could chew, I thought the marathon would be easier," he said. "(My shins) started to hurt in the second half, especially the right one. I could barely walk up here, because the calves are completely knotted up."

Lance Armstrong was surprised how much effort and how hard it was to complete his first marathon in less than 3 hours.

 

A marathon is 26 miles...

 

The average person who trains for a marathon try to reach a maximum of about 20 miles (32.2 km) in their longest weekly run and about 40 miles (64.4 km) a week in total when training for the marathon.

Most male elite marathon runners will have weekly mileages of over 100 miles (160.9 km).

Many training programs last a minimum of five or six months, with a gradual increase (every two weeks) in the distance run and a little decrease (1 week) for recovery.

 

We live in a get something for nothing world. We go to the store and look all around looking for a sale. I have come to the conclusion, that sometimes buying something that is cheaper priced, doesn't exactly mean it is better quality.


Working at Ford Dealerships in Scottsbluff and in Phoenix, listening to the Mechanics, they always said, pay a little more for your tools, for in the long run, they will last longer, and you pay less in the years to come.

In Christianity it is the same way, if we want to grow in the Lord, it is going to take time and effort. When I look at the Characters in the Bible that God has left me to look at, I feel ashamed for the lack of effort I put in, in comparison to them. The people in the Word of God, were just normal people just like us. The only difference, between a successful godly man and an ungodly man, was the amount of effort they put for God. Whether it was putting effort in denying his own selfish evil lust, or putting effort in fighting the temptations of the devil.

We need to put extra effort for God. The word of God demonstrates, that God wants us to put extra effort to live for God.

(Ecclesiastes 12:13) Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter:

Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.   

 

King Solomon sums up the way our life should be lived. "Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man."

If the whole duty of man is to fear God and keep his commands, it means that God expects a big effort for Him, for this is the whole duty of man.

Remember anything worthwhile, takes a little effort. People expect something for nothing. But in order for us to be successful in Christianity we have to put some effort.

Brother Warren and Sister Gladys passed away and went to be with the Lord. They were faithful to God many years. How were they able to successfully stay committed to the Lord? With lots of effort.

 

 

PROPOSITION: EXAMPLES OF EFFORT EXPECTED.

 

MONEY FOR TAXES-

(Matthew 17:24-27)    "...Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours."

This story is about some tax collectors who wanted to tax Jesus for the Temple tax. Jesus explains to Peter that Jesus doesn't have to pay the temple tax, because He is the Son of God. But so they wouldn't offend anyone, Jesus told them to pay the temple tax.

Now from this example we can see, Jesus was going to provide Peter with the temple tax. But he was going to have to put some effort. And part of that effort was called faith.

He had to go down to the lake and go fishing. I can imagine what Peter must have thought, when Jesus said to go and pay the temple tax, and Peter probably wondered how am I going to pay the taxes, Jesus said to go fishing. Sure Peter was a fisherman, but he had never went fishing to catch a fish with money in its mouth. But this time he did.

Peter went down to the Lake, baited his hook, and cast his line, and waited to catch a fish. The first fish he caught, he opened his mouth and there was enough money for Jesus and Peter.

It took faith and effort, on Peter's part. We need to realize that when God promises us something, we must do our part, in order for God to do His part. Even if we do not understand why we have to do something for the Lord, let us do it anyway, and your rewards will be great.

God wants us to demonstrate faith through action. If we believe God can do something, we will act upon it.

Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. NIV

            We have to fight the temptation to doubt what God says is true. When the world says something and God says something else we are to believe God no matter what the world says.

 

If Apostle Peter would have never went down to the Lake, He would have never got the money. Apostle Peter could have disagreed with Jesus and thought it was dumb to go looking for money in a fish and refused to go fishing. And he would not have received the money for the taxes. We have to understand that living for God is doing what God wants no matter what we think on how it should be done.

Apostle Peter never earned it, but he willingly did do his part.


To apply this to our own spiritual lives, God has promised to take care of us, he said he will provide for us, God also wants us to pay tithes and offerings, so the devil, tempts us not to pay our tithes and offerings, because we don't seem to have enough money to pay our bills.

 

(Matthew 6:33) "But seek first His kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

God's promise is to provide for us our necessities if we seek His Kingdom first. Our effort is to have faith in God, pay our tithes and offerings, and trust that God will come through with His promise. And you will be surprised, God will come through with His part.

But it is going to take effort. Can God provide for us, anytime He choses, yes, even without us giving effort. But God didn't chose to do that way, He has given us instructions, to put trust in Him, and He will bless us for our obedience. It is going to take trust, even when we do not understand how God is going to do it.

 

HEALING OF THE WITHERED HAND-

Mark 3:1‑6

3:1 Another time he went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. 2 Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. 3 Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Stand up in front of everyone." 4 Then Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent. 5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. 6 Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus. NIV

 

Ps 37:32 The wicked lie in wait for the righteous,

seeking their very lives;

33 but the LORD will not leave them in their power

or let them be condemned when brought to trial. NIV

NIV

 

Some enemies of Christ were waiting for an opportunity to corner Jesus, and frame Him.

The bible says that they were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched Him closely. There was a man with a shriveled hand was at the synagogue. It was useless, he could not use it for anything. He wanted that hand healed. And it was at the perfect time, for Jesus was going to prove a point to those evil men. He asked the man with the shriveled hand to stand in front of everyone.  Now the man could have refused. He could have said I don't want to, I am the shy type. But he obeyed Jesus. Then Jesus asked him to Stretch out his hand. Now here again, the man could have refused Jesus command, and said "Why should I, it doesn't work anyway" but instead, he obeyed Jesus, in front of the whole crowd. He stretched out his hand and his hand was completely restored.

It was a example of someone who obeyed Jesus, and was blessed for it.

If he hadn't obeyed Jesus, he would have kept his shriveled hand. Did he earn it? No. He just obeyed Christ and had faith.

We need to have more faith in Christ, and when he asks us to do something, let us do it, even if it does embarrass us, we can still work for God, for the dividends we will receive, are incredible.

God can turn a bad situation into a good situation. The man had a shriveled hand, and with a little faith and obedience God blessed him with a completely healed hand.

 

I find this situation pretty interesting because if the man with the shriveled hand was embarrassed he could have risked his chance of being healed by not obeying Jesus. And if he allowed that to keep him from obeying Jesus, he would not have been healed. I wonder how many blessings we miss out on because we do not obey God’s commands and principles.

 

You see it was better for that man to be embarrassed one time in front of all the people, than to continue living with a shriveled hand.

We should be willing to do anything God says so that He may bless you.

 


 

GREAT CATCH OF FISH-

Luke 5:1‑11

5:1 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God, 2 he saw at the water's edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch." 5 Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets." 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!" 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men."  11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. NIV

 

This is the story of some fishermen by trade, Jesus borrowed one of the boats to preach a message to the people from right off the shore.

When He finished speaking, he told Peter to go out into the deep water, and let down the nets.

Now Peter wasn't a disciple yet, he and the other fishermen, were fishermen by trade, they knew how to fish, they did this for a living. They knew what they were talking about. So when Jesus, told them to go down into the deep water they were confused, because they had just come from there, and they had fished all night and had caught nothing. He could have told Jesus, you are just a teacher, what do you know about fishing, you probably never fished in your life. But instead out of respect and honor for Jesus, he obeyed Jesus. And when they went out into the deep where they had just failed catching fish, the caught so much fish, that their nets began to break, and their boats began to sink. Then Peter realized who Jesus was, He was not an ordinary teacher or man, Jesus was special, He was God. So Jesus told Peter, James and John that they were going to be fishers of men. God knows better than we do, we have to trust him in this, and obey Him.

As I look at this story, I realize that sometimes we can get to thinking we know everything, we can get to doubting what God wants us to do. Because we supposed to know it. Like Peter, he knew how to fish, he had done it for a living, but Peter showed me the example, that even when we don't understand why God wants us to act or do something, we should do it without any hesitation, because when we do, God will bless us abundantly. It says that the nets were full, the boats began to sink, why? Because of Peter, James and John's obedience.

If they wouldn't have obeyed Jesus in casting their nets, they would have never been blessed like they were. They would have stayed without any fish.

Applying this to our own spiritual life, God has asked us to be fishers of men.

(Matthew 28:19,20)


Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

He has told us to go out into the deep, He said go and make disciples of all nations, of course we might not be able to go into all the world, but we can go into our neighborhoods, go to our relatives, go to our friends, and baptize them.

We might be like Peter, and say, but God I have asked my friends to go to church, I have asked my family to go to church, I have asked my neighbors, but they don't want to come, so I must not have the touch.

But remember what Peter did, Peter knew the odds were against him finding any fish, where he had fished all night. He had tried every trick in the house, and Jesus wanted him to go out to the same place and try again.

We might say the same thing, we have tried, and we have tried, and we haven't had any success. But Jesus says to keep trying.

When Peter obeyed Jesus, and went out to the very spot, he had no success at, through his obedience, Jesus led a large school of fish, into his net. When we are fishing for men, we need to have faith and trust and effort. Keep trying, because sooner or later, God will lead a lost sinner to  you, so that you may guide him/her to Christ. It may be your friend, someone in your family, it may be your neighbor or your enemy. Or even a friend of yours that you haven't seen in a long time.

We will never know unless we cast our nets in the deep. We will never be a fisher of men, if we never do any fishing.

A Christian that never tries to win a soul to Christ, is like the fisherman that goes to the fishing hole without a fish pole.

He hopes to catch a fish, but he never puts the effort. Fishing can be frustrating at times, I know when me and my best friend used to go fishing, we would go down to the store and buy worms, and go fishing. Sometimes we would go and we would stay out hours baiting the hook, and waiting for a fish to bite. And sometimes we would get a bite, and we would wrestle with the fish for a little and it would turn out to be a little blue gill.

But that didn't stop us, because other times, we would go out there and as it seemed like the second you threw out your line, you caught a fish.

But I learned something from those experiences. If I don't go fishing, I will never catch a fish.

It is the same way, spiritually speaking, if we never go fishing for men, we will never convert anyone. God wants us to go into the world and spread the good news.

Verse 20 the last part of the verse helps me out. God made a promise to everyone who goes fishing for men. He said, "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

What a blessing! God has promised that if we go out and fish for men, if we try and soul win, He will be with us.

This ought to help you out, to know that when you go door to door, or if you ask a friend, or a neighbor or a family member, to go to church, or for a bible study, that Jesus is standing riou can catch for God. God can use all kinds of fishermen.


Don't be the fisherman that calls himself a fisherman, but doesn't go fishing. We all have the same tackle box, we all have the same guide, and that is Jesus, who said, He will be with us always unto the end of the age.

 

1 Kings 17:9-18:1

9 "Go at once to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. I have commanded a widow in that place to supply you with food." 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, "Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?" 11 As she was going to get it, he called, "And bring me, please, a piece of bread."

 

12 "As surely as the LORD your God lives," she replied, "I don't have any bread-only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it-and die."

 

13 Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives rain on the land.'"

 

15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah. 

 

17 Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing. 18 She said to Elijah, "What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?"

 

19 "Give me your son," Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. 20 Then he cried out to the LORD, "O LORD my God, have you brought tragedy also upon this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?" 21 Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried to the LORD, "O LORD my God, let this boy's life return to him!"

 

22 The LORD heard Elijah's cry, and the boy's life returned to him, and he lived. 23 Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, "Look, your son is alive!"

 

24 Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth." NIV

 

 

 

  

Theme: Concern for your future?

Introduction: We just got back from vacation, we went to Los Angeles, Phoenix and Prescott Arizona and Colorado Springs to visit family.

            As we traveled, we visited with various relatives and one thought arose in my mind, was concern for their future. Some were doing fine, while others who were raised in the church were far from concerned with their spiritual life. Their lives were in a mess and I know one who can fix it, but they don’t want to hear it. So the thought was is there any concern for  their future.

The other day as I was studying the Bible I ran across a verse that was caught my attention. It read...

Ezek 3:18 When I say to a wicked man, 'You will surely die,' and you do not warn him or speak out to dissuade him from his evil ways in order to save his life, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood.

19 But if you do warn the wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his evil ways, he will die for his sin; but you will have saved yourself. (NIV)

It is a burden on my heart that everyone will be saved, Apostle Peter said in

2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.(NIV)

And with this burden I want to present you with these questions for you to think about?

 

Proposition: Questions concerning your future?

 

I. Are you comfortable talking about your future in Eternity?

This is a very important question because if you are not comfortable talking about your future in Eternity it is most likely you are expecting it to be thrown into Hell. God loves us and has allowed us to make a choice rather than to accept the fate the devil wants us to experience.

Jesus came into the world to save sinners (I Timothy 1:15) "Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners-of whom I am the worst." and since we are all sinners according to (Romans 3:23) "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Jesus came to save everyone.

Jesus doesn't want anyone to perish. He wants all to come to repentance.

Being uncomfortable with your future is good, because not until you see a need to do something about your future will you do something.

This reminds me of the parable of the Prodigal Son found in (Luke 15), the one Son that left His Father did not do something until he finally realized his future, He realized that his father's servants were living better than he was, he realized the only way things were going to get better in the future was when he would go to His Father. And when He did, his father forgave him.

It is good to feel uncomfortable about your future if it makes you do something about it.

 

II. Can God forgive me of all my Sins?

God does not want us to be a slave to the guilt of sin. God does not want us to suffer from the consequences of sin. God knows everything we do, God sees everything. Sin has us in bondage, and as long as we remain in sin, we will always a slave to sin.

 

Can I be forgiven of all my sins?

This question has stopped a lot of people from making a decision for Christ. Many people think the way they have lived their life is so evil, that there is no way that their sins can be forgiven. They think that God wouldn't want a dirty old sinner like them.

God can forgive anything, and He does want to save everyone, (II Peter 3:9) "...not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

Let us take a look at some Scriptures that will help answer this question.

(I Corinthians 6:9-11)

Apostle Paul is writing to the Corinthian Christians and he is warning them about falling back into what they came out of.

What kind of sins were the Corinthians involved in before they were Christians?

Sexual Immoral- before becoming Christians some were involved with sexual sins, they were involved with sex outside of marriage.

Idolaters- some worshipped idols, they worshipped idols they created.

Adulterers- some were involved in cheating on their wives or husbands.

Male Prostitutes- some were effeminite, acted like women, and some were male prostitutes.

Homosexuals- some were homosexuals

Thieves- Greedy- Drunkards- Slanderers- Swindlers-

And each of these sins would have kept them from going to Heaven. But they had been forgiven of these sins, they were able to be Christians.

Besides if you think you have been guilty of things that are bad, Apostle Paul said he was the worst of sinners. (I Timothy 1:15). Apostle Paul was guilty of fighting against Jesus, he was guilty of persecuting and killing Christians.

Paul said that the Reason why Jesus came to the world was to save sinners, of whom I am the worst.

So if what is holding you back from making a decision that will change your future, is you think you can't be forgiven, then reconsider because God can and will forgive you. If He can forgive and save the worst of sinners, then He can save you.

 

III. The Reason I don't want to become a Christian is because I know I won't make it.

Can I make it?

During the terrible days of the Blitz, a father, holding his small son by the hand, ran from a building that had been struck by a bomb. In the front yard was a shell hole. Seeking shelter as quickly as possible, the father jumped into the hole and held up his arms for his son to follow. Terrified, yet hearing his father's voice telling him to jump, the boy replied, "I can't see you!" The father, looking up against the sky tinted red by the burning buildings, called to the silhouette of his son, "But I can see you. Jump!" The boy jumped, because he trusted his father. The Christian faith enables us to face life or meet death, not because we can see, but with the certainty that we are seen; not that we know all the answers, but that we are known. Even if it doesn’t look like we can make it, we have a God who can help us make it. He is like the father, who helped his son. The son couldn’t see him, yet he was there.

Yes you can make it! There are many people in the Bible that made it, even though it seemed like it wouldn't be typical of them to.

Apostle Paul was one example, He was a rebellious man, he hated Christians, in fact (Acts 8:3) it says that Paul was destroying the Church, he was going house to house searching for Christians so he could put them in prison.

Yet when he became a Christian, Christians didn't believe that he could make it, they were scared to death of him (Acts 9:26). The Christians in Jerusalem were afraid of him. Why? because they felt he wasn't really a disciple. They probably didn't think he would make it, and they felt he could easily turn back, and throw them in prison.

But Apostle Paul knew that he could make it, he is the one who wrote that encouraging scripture found in (Philipians 4:13) "I can do everything through Him who gives me strength."

Sure you are going to fall, but it doesn't mean you have to stay that way.   (Proverbs 24:16) "for though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again, but the wicked are brought down by calamity.

Many people have made it, one of my teachers in Bible College was a prize fighter when he was young, he loved to fight, when he became a Christian, he was able to fight the temptation of fighting, in fact he died a strong Christian over 60 years of being a successful Christian.

 

Reasons why you can be successful...

a. Christ

You can make it too, for when you are baptized you put on Christ, (Galatians 3:27) "For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ."

You put on Christ when you are baptized, with Christ helping you, you can do everything by which He strengthens you. You can be a successful Christian because Jesus will give you the strength to be.

 

b. God

When you become a Christian you have God on your side, to give you power to overcome. "What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God be for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)

God will not allow you to be tempted by something that you can't handle, and if you are He always provides a way of escape.                    (I Corinthians 10:13)

"No Temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

 

c. Holy Spirit

When you become a Christian you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. At Baptism you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). And the Holy Spirit will give you the inner strength you need to be victorious.

Eph 3:16

16        I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, (NIV)

 

 

IV. What can I do about my future?

You can change your future, to being one of happiness, and peace. You don't have to be worried about going to Hell, you don't have to worry about being punished forever.

 

1. Believing in Jesus Christ (Mark 16:16)

    "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned."

Believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (Matthew 16:16) Believe that in Him only is there Salvation. (Acts 4:12)

2. Repent- (Acts 2:38) Repent means to feel sorry for your sins, and to change your mind and actions about the sins you have committed.

You must repent of all your sins.

3. Confess- Confess who Jesus is (Acts 8:37) so that on the day of Judgment He will confess your name to the Father. (Matthew 10:32)

4. Be Baptized-

So that you will be saved (Mark 16:16)

So that your sins will be forgiven (Acts 2:38)

So that you will put on Christ (Galatians 3:27)

So that you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38)

So that you will have a good conscience toward God (I Peter 3:21)

5. Live a godly life and be faithful- I Peter 1:15,16, Rev 2:10

Conclusion:

I. Are you comfortable talking about your future in Eternity?

    If you are you don't have to be, you can do something about it.

II. Can God forgive me of all my sins?

Yes, He can, He forgave Apostle Paul who said he was the worst of sinners.

III. Can I Make It?

            Yes, you can make it, Apostle Paul, made it. You can make it because you will receive the help from God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. They will help you conquer anything. "If God is for us, who can be against us?"

What can I do about it? You can believe in Jesus, Repent of all your sins, Confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and be baptized for the forgiveness of all your sins, and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

And when you become a Christian, grow and stay faithful, and you will not be worried about your future, but you will be excited about your future!

 

LIFE IS UNCERTAIN!

Hastings Morning Service- May 23, 2010

Introduction: This Morning I would like to bring a message on how nothing in life is for certain. Often times our plans, our big ideas fall through. We sometimes depend on someone and he or she doesn't come through. Sometimes we think we have a dependable car and it falls apart. Sometimes we think our finances are just where we want them, and something happens that it we lose it. Life is filled with many uncertainties.

I. NOTHING IS FOR CERTAIN

 

WE DO KNOW THAT LIFE IS SHORT...

 

Ps 39:5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath. Selah (NIV)

 

Ps 39:6 Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it. (NIV)

 

            The psalmist tells us that our days are like the width of a hand

 

Ps 39:5 My life is no longer than my hand! My whole lifetime is but a moment to you. Proud man! Frail as breath! A shadow! And all his busy rushing ends in nothing. He heaps up riches for someone else to spend. (TLB)

            The living bible makes it clear, that our life no longer than our hand, it is like a shadow. It goes by so fast.

            It seems like the other day I was at I was a teenager in Los Angeles, sitting at the dining room table looking out the window that faced my high school, wondering what the future held for me.

 

James describes life like a wild flower, here today gone tomorrow. 

 

James 1:10 But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business. (NIV)

           

Apostle Peter says that we are like grass we wither away. Not here very long. Just for a season.

1 Pet 1:24 For, "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 25 but the word of the Lord stands forever." And this is the word that was preached to you. (NIV)

            We are like the flowers of the field, beautiful for awhile, but it isn't long before we are gone.

 

Friends Can Be Uncertain

Often people think, I know one thing, is that my friends I can depend on them. When you were young you had your friends whom you grew up with, and many times you feel like they are the ones you will be able to confide and depend on. But what happens they move away, something happens in which you get into a disagreement and you no longer hang around them. I look back at the friends I went to school with and when I go back to Los Angeles, I may or may not see one of them. This year I did not see one.

 

Apostle Paul had a Christian friend who was a good enough of a friend that he was mentioned in two books.

Col 4:14 Our dear friend Luke, the doctor, and Demas send greetings.   (NIV)

Phile 1:24 And so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, my fellow workers. (NIV)

            Both Colossians and Philemon were written about 60 A.D. Demas was known by many as shown here in both the book written to the church in Colossee and to the book written to Philemon.

 

But by the year of 66 A.D just 6 years later.... Paul wrote to a young preacher named Timothy.

2 Tim 4:10 for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. (NIV)

 

            Demas who was a strong Christian, one who helped Paul alot. Who seemed to be a good and close friend of Apostle Paul's was gone in 6 years. Sometimes we depend on our Christian friends and they leave the Lord, how does that affect you? Apostle Paul stayed strong, no matter if Demas would chase after riches instead of pursuing godliness.

 

Friends, Sometimes Do Not Give Support When You Need It Most

2 Tim 4:14 Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done. 15 You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message. 16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. 17 But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion's mouth. (NIV)

            Apostle Paul writing to the young preacher Timothy, writes that when he needed help no one went to his support, everyone deserted him. If Apostle Paul depended on his Christian friends for his only support, he would have failed miserably. But you notice who gave him the strength he needed. It was God. When others fail you, God is still there.

 

OUR PLANS ARE NOT EVEN CERTAIN...

King Solomon in his wisdom from God, instructs us not to boast about tomorrow. Our plans are not for certain.

Prov 27:1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.

2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips. (NIV)

 

Prov 27:1 Don't brag about your plans for tomorrow-- wait and see what happens.

2 Don't praise yourself; let others do it! (TLB)

 

SINNERS MAKE PLANS TO PARTY

Isa 56:10 Israel's watchmen are blind, they all lack knowledge; they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they lie around and dream, they love to sleep.

11 They are dogs with mighty appetites; they never have enough. They are shepherds who lack understanding; they all turn to their own way, each seeks his own gain.

12 "Come," each one cries, "let me get wine! Let us drink our fill of beer! And tomorrow will be like today, or even far better." (NIV)

            The Israelites had become a very wicked country. They became like our County is today. Always looking for a party. Always making plans for the weekend.

            Today many make plans for partying, but are their plans for certain. What happens if someone dies in a car wreck? What happens if a big fight breaks out? Besides after the party, what good has it done?

            I had a cousin, who during a night of going to parties died in a car wreck.

 

SOME DO NOT CARE ABOUT GODLINESS AND END UP DYING IN THEIR SIN...

 

King Belshazzar was a King of one of the greatest kingdoms that ever existed. He thought his life was set. He partied with all his friends. He had a banquet for a thousand of them. He thought everything was just right. King Belshazzar in his pride drank wine from the gold and silver goblets of the temple.

 

Dan 5:1  King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for a thousand of his nobles and drank wine with them. 2 While Belshazzar was drinking his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets that Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines might drink from them. 3 So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. 4 As they drank the wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone. 5 Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. 6 His face turned pale and he was so frightened that his knees knocked together and his legs gave way. 7 The king called out for the enchanters, astrologers and diviners to be brought and said to these wise men of Babylon, "Whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck, and he will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom."

 

            Even though King Belshazzar may have been one of the greatest kings of the one of the greatest kingdoms of the world, he still had God to answer too.

 

22 "But you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled yourself, though you knew all this. 23 Instead, you have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life and all your ways. 24  Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription. 25 "This is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN 26            "This is what these words mean: Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end. 27 Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting. 28 Peres: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians." 29   Then at Belshazzar's command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck, and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom. 30 That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain, (NIV)

            King Belshazzar had big plans he probably never imagined that this would be his last day of life. He probably was certain that he had many years in his life to go. But he didn't.

 

Do you have big plans without God?

 

II. SINCE LIFE IS SO UNCERTAIN...

WHAT CAN WE DO?

 

1. DO THE WILL OF GOD

 

I Jn 2:17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. (NIV)

           

Religions and traditions of man cannot save you, but doing the will of God is certain to allow you to go to Heaven.

 

Everything around you will pass away.

Apostle Paul says that on the "day of the Lord" everything will be destroyed.

 

2 Pet 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives (NIV)

            But those who do the will of God live forever. Don't you want to live forever with God in heaven?

 

Jesus said that only those who do the will of His Father will enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matt 7:21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (NIV)

 

 

OBEY THE FATHER BY BEING BAPTIZED AND RECEIVING THE HOLY SPIRIT

In Matthew 28:18 Jesus said that all authority was given to Him.

Matt 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. (NIV)

 

In John, Jesus tells Nicodemus...

John 3:5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. (NIV)

 

In Acts, Apostle Peter gives the command of repenting and being baptized for the forgiveness of your sins.

Acts 2:38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

 

In Mark, Jesus says that whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.                

Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (NIV)

 

Example of baptism...

Acts 8:26 But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, "Arise and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza." (This is a desert {road} )

27 And he arose and went; and behold, there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure; and he had come to Jerusalem to worship. 28 And he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, "Go up and join this chariot." 30 And when Philip had run up, he heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, "Do you understand what you are reading?" 31 And he said, "Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of Scripture which he was reading was this: "He was led as a sheep to slaughter; and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so He does not open His mouth. 33 "In humiliation His judgment was taken away; who shall relate His generation? For His life is removed from the earth." 34 And the eunuch answered Philip and said, "Please {tell me}  of whom does the prophet say this? Of himself, or of someone else?" 35 And Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him. 36 And as they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, "Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?" 37 [And Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."] 38 And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch; and he baptized him. 39            And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch saw him no more, but went on his way rejoicing. (NAS)

            This example of someone being baptized, shows us that God wants us to be put totally under the water, even as Jesus was when John baptized him.

            Have you been baptized into Christ?

 

CONCLUSION:

            This life is filled with uncertainties, we cannot depend on our job, we cannot depend on our health, we cannot depend on our riches, we cannot even depend on our friends to get to heaven.

But we can depend on God!

Would you make that decision today?          

Matt 21:28 "What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the vineyard.' 29 "'I will not,' he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. 30 "Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go. 31 "Which of the two did what his father wanted?" "The first," they answered. Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. (NIV)

Theme: Let Us Encourage One Another

Introduction: Today I want to talk about our need to encourage each other.

When you go and talk with someone, sometimes you know what a person is going to say. Some are always happy and encouraging. Some have enormous mood swings, so you never no what to expect. Some are always down in the dumps and everything they talk about is negative, you know you will have to encourage them.

We are all responsible for uplifting one another, and helping each other out. But sometimes we allow the devil to work in our life, and we may be bringing others down.

Some people are always looking at the bad side of life, everything is negative, and nothing is going right or nothing will go right. Actually the Christian should never be known as a person of discouragement. We have a great big God, one who is omnipotent (all powerful), omniscient (all knowing) and omnipresent (everywhere present).

 

Heb 10:23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.25Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-- and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (NIV)

 

Verse 23 tells us to hold on to the hope we profess, we are to continue to think about, to hope for our salvation, because God is faithful, what He has promised He will fulfill.

Verse 24 tells us that to consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

1. EXAMPLES ON HOW THE WORD CONSIDER IS USED IN THE BIBLE

a. Consider- learn from others

Raven example of consider...

When Jesus was talking to his disciples telling them not to worry about things, he used the same Greek word katanoeo to remind them to look at the raven. Consider them, observe them, watch them, learn from them.

Luke 12:24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? (NIV)

In our quest to encourage others, we must sit back and look how we can encourage one another. Even as the disciples were to take a minute to look how the ravens handle stress, and how they don't worry, how God takes care of them. We too must take time out of our busy lives to sit back and figure out how to encourage one another.

We often just want to live our own life and not worry about anybody elses. But God wants us to be concerned with others enough to figure out how to encourage others.

Ravens soon become a reminder, every time you see one, you are reminded of their lack of worry. They just go about their business. And if they are not concerned, we are much more valuable than they are, so let us remember that God will take care of us.

 

Look at how others are able to encourage others, learn from them.

 

Learn To Talk less-

There is a little saying that goes something like this. We are given two ears and only one mouth therefore we should use the ears more than the mouth.

 

Some people are able to encourage by not talking a lot. They live under a good saying of if it isn't worth saying, don't say it. Some people want to talk whether it is good or bad. They just want to talk. But King Solomon says be careful with our speech that the words are not many. Because usually sin is there.

 

Prov 10:19 When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.

20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value.

21 The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of judgment.  NIV

 

Prov 10:19‑21

19 Don't talk so much. You keep putting your foot in your mouth. Be sensible and turn off the flow! 20 When a good man speaks, he is worth listening to, but the words of fools are a dime a dozen.21 A godly man gives good advice, but a rebel is destroyed by lack of common sense.  TLB

 

When a person likes to talk a lot, often time words are used recklessly and he can produce sharp piercing words that hurt others. If we talk less, and think before we talk, the discouraging piercing words can be eliminated.

 

Prov 17:27A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered. (NIV)

 

A man of knowledge thinks before he talks, he restrains himself from saying things he ought not to say.

 

Prov 17:27 A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even‑tempered. 28 Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue. NIV

 

Prov 17:27 The man of few words and settled mind is wise; therefore, even a fool is thought to be wise when he is silent. It pays him to keep his mouth shut.  TLB

 

Prov 12:18 Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

If we listen more, then we wouldn=t have to worry about hurting anyone.

 

When To Talk More-

Apostle Paul amazes me by being able to be persecuted by others and still keep a level head about him. In Acts the 19th chapter there was a big uproar against Paul, started by Demetrius. Demetrius started to talk evil about Paul cutting him down and causing a big problem. Telling others that Paul was a trouble maker and so on. He had the place in such an uproar that most of the people did not know what they were doing there.

 

Acts 19:32 The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there. (NIV)

 

This sounds a lot like what problems are all about, most of the time, grudges that are passed down from generation to generation, the relatives don't know what they are mad about, they just know that one of their close friends or relatives said this, whether it is true or false, let us hold a grudge, and the grudge lives on.

But Apostle Paul was the one who the people were against. There was such an uproar against Paul. You would think that Paul would have hard feelings, you would think that he would be discouraged and would talk negative after everyone jumped on him like that. But noticed what Apostle Paul did.

Acts 20:1 When the uproar had ended, Paul sent for the disciples and, after encouraging them, said good-by and set out for Macedonia. 2 He traveled through that area, speaking many words of encouragement to the people, and finally arrived in Greece, 3 where he stayed three months. Because the Jews made a plot against him just as he was about to sail for Syria, he decided to go back through Macedonia. (NIV)

Apostle Paul spoke with many words of encouragement. Incredible Christian, how did he do it? Jesus Christ. When we don’t think we have anything left in the tank, Jesus fills our tank.

 

Phil 4:13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength. (NIV)

 

b. Consider- look intently as to help the situation

Edward Steichen, who eventually became one of the world's most renowned photographers, almost gave up on the day he shot his first pictures. At 16, young Steichen bought a camera and took 50 photos. Only one turned out ‑‑ a portrait of his sister at the piano. Edward's father thought that was a poor showing. But his mother insisted that the photograph of his sister was so beautiful that it more than compensated for 49 failures. Her encouragement convinced the youngster to stick with his new hobby. He stayed with it for the rest of his life, but it had been a close call. What tipped the scales? Edward=s Mother had to look intently at what her sons situation was. Edward had his Father against his efforts and His Mother decided to encourage. And with her encouragement, he continued on. If he would have listened to his Father, he would have considered himself a failure, messing up 49 of 50 pictures. But according to his Mother, he had one really good one.

 

Acts 27:13 When a gentle south wind began to blow, they thought they had obtained what they wanted; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete. 14 Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the "northeaster," swept down from the island. 15 The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along.

16 As we passed to the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were hardly able to make the lifeboat secure. 17 When the men had hoisted it aboard, they passed ropes under the ship itself to hold it together. Fearing that they would run aground on the sandbars of Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor and let the ship be driven along. 18 We took such a violent battering from the storm that the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard. 19 On the third day, they threw the ship's tackle overboard with their own hands. 20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved. 21 After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: "Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss. 22 But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed. 23 Last night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood beside me 24 and said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul. 38 When they had eaten as much as they wanted, they lightened the ship by throwing the grain into the sea. 39 When daylight came, they did not recognize the land, but they saw a bay with a sandy beach, where they decided to run the ship aground if they could. (NIV)

 

Acts 27:39

39        And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship. (KJV)

The people on the ship were looking for an opportunity to help their situation, they had been in constant trouble for many days, they were looking for an opportunity to land the ship. They found the opportunity.

This is the way we should be with encouraging others, is looking for a way to encourage others.

It is our duty to God, to think about, how we can help spur one another to love and good deeds. In other words, it is our duty to think about how can we help others. Remember not to cut down or degrade, which is much easier to do, or more frequently done. But to spend time thinking "how can I spur others to love and good deeds."

            Just because a person does not go with your idea, if it is not sinful, then don’t criticize because you do not agree or you would do it differently.

 

c. Consider- to be thoughtful

Another definition of consider- to be thoughtful of (others, their feelings, etc.) show consideration for.

We can really help others out by being thoughtful when we speak to others, be thoughtful of their feelings.

A good way to put this into practice is by remembering the golden rule in our Christian walk.

Matthew 7:12- So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

12        "Do for others what you want them to do for you. This is the teaching of the laws of Moses in a nutshell. (TLB)

 

If we respect others feelings, if we are thoughtful, we can be more effective in helping others to love and good deeds.


But if we are rude and not thoughtful of others, we will turn them off, and they won't even want to do love and good deeds.

Jesus mentioned His golden rule twice in the word of God, this shows us it must be very important.

 

(Luke 6:31) "Do to others as you would have them do to you."

It only makes sense, if you hurt someone's feelings, how can you spur another to love and good deeds. If you have talked evil about them, or if you have mistreated them, how can you expect to be able to spur them to love and good deeds.

 

So when the Hebrew writer spoke about, consider how we may spur one another, it means to think about how you can spur one another, and while spuring one another to love and good deeds, you be thoughtful and careful on how to spur one another.

Those who discourage are those who can=t wait to cause others problems they have the latest and the greatest. It is like the scripture says their words lie in wait for blood.

Often times people think being harsh is the best thing. But God says that pleasant words promote instruction. People are willing to listen when the way a person talks are pleasant. If they are mean and nasty, the instruction goes in one ear and out the other.

24        Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.   (NIV)

(Proverbs 15:1,2) A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

When we answer gently, good things can happen, but if someone is angry and you answer viciously or hatefully, there will be a big fight. But if we answer gently, it can calm a person down.


The tongue of the wise is smart, thinks before he talks, but the fool spits out foolish things.

[A soft answer] Gentleness will often disarm the most furious, where positive derangement has not taken place; one angry word will always beget another, for the disposition of one spirit always begets its own likeness in another: thus kindness produces kindness, and rage produces rage. Bible Examples of  Encouraging and Discouraging people

 

I. WAYS TO BE A DISCOURAGMENT TO OTHERS

A. CONVINCE OTHERS TO DO EVIL

 ADAM AND EVE- (Genesis 3:1-8)

Adam and Eve were the first human beings on earth, God created Adam then God created Eve to be a helper to Adam. This is an example of one person being tempted by the devil, and then after she falls into temptation, she discourages Adams spiritual life, by tempting him, and encouraging him to eat of the forbidden fruit.

Now if Eve would have followed the biblical principle found in Hebrews to consider how to spur her husband on to love and good deeds, she would have never talked him into eating the forbidden fruit.

Adam isn't totally innocent, he should have fought off the temptation presented to him by his wife, and helped encourage her to repent of her sins, and not went along with her sinning. But he did.

How could have Adam and Eve come out victorious? By helping each other out, encouraging one another. Not influencing each other for the bad.

B. TRY AND CONVINCE SOMEONE TO GIVE UP WHEN THINGS AREN'T GOING RIGHT           

JOB AND HIS WIFE- (JOB 2:1-10)

 Poor Job, he was a man of God, that was being tested by the devil, the devil had just killed his sheep, and had killed his sons and daughters, and now the devil had struck him with terrible sores across his body, from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. As he sat scrapping his body with a broken piece of pottery, his wife told him to

"Curse God and die". Some people are like this, when a person is down, they kick him when he is down. But the right thing to do would have been to consider the way she could have helped him in his sufferings.

 

II. WAYS TO BE AN ENCOURAGEMENT

A. BE THERE FOR OTHERS WHEN THINGS SEEM IMPOSSIBLE

 

 JONATHAN & HIS ARMOR BEARER- (I Samuel 14:1-23)


Jonathan wanted to take on the impossible, at least it was impossible with man, but with God's help, Jonathan knew that he could defeat the Philistines even it was going to be two against thousands.

Notice that Jonathan looked for help, and when he went to his armor-bearer for help, his armor-bearer, offered him help. In fact he said... "Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul".

The natural thing to do, would have been to make fun of Jonathan, and tell him he was crazy to want to take on the thousands of Philistines. But the armor beared didn't do what most would do, but he considered how he could spur Jonathan to love and good deeds, and that was to go with him, and to be there when things seemed impossible.

 

B. REMIND THOSE WHO LOSE THEIR FAITH, WHO GOD IS.

 

ELISHA AND HIS SERVANT- (II Kings 6:8-23)

The enemy was going to attack the city of Dothan, the king was angry with Elisha and wanted to capture him. It looked like it was impossible to get out of this situation. But Elisha asked God to open the eyes of his servant. And when God did, the servant saw hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

When a person gets down, we need to strengthen others, by reminding them that God is still on the throne, and that God will help them. God can and will help.

It is amazing what a little encouragement will do for others.

 

Conclusion: Are you an encouragement to others?

I challenge each of you to be careful what you say to, or about others, we are to spur one another to love and good deeds.

Encourage others when no-one else will, and encourage others when they are losing their faith.

If we do this, we will be doing each other a big favor, and it will help each other to love and do good deeds.

Hastings Morning Sermon- May 9,2010

Text: 1 Kings 2:19 When Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah, the king stood up to meet her, bowed down to her and sat down on his throne. He had a throne brought for the king's mother, and she sat down at his right hand. NIV

Introduction: When Mother’s Day approaches, some get worried what they are going to get their Mothers. People rush here and there to buy gifts. But do you find time to think about the blessing your Mother has been to you? You see you can look at pictures and see how young she once was, you can remember some of the things she did for you. But there is so much more that you have forgotten or maybe never knew what she did for you. Sometimes the sacrifices so you could have something special.

Diapers… What about the thousands of diapers that were changed for you, that you probably don’t remember. And I am sure for every diaper changing you let her know that you needed to be changed, with some loud crying. And who would go and change your diaper? Do you think Dad, ran over and said, hey it is my turn, let me do it?

Do you think you bothered Mom, when she was right in the middle of something? One thing that bothers me, is when I am busy and someone asks me to do something else. It is like, hey don’t you see I am busy. Well, don’t you think that we did that to our Mom a whole bunch of times with our diaper changing experiences.

But diapers though it is needed is only a small part of the Mother experience. A godly Mother does so much more for her children than an ordinary Mother. She is concerned with not only the physical aspect of life, but the spiritual aspect of life as well. A godly Mother understands that her decisions about will affect her children in either and good or a bad way.

Mother’s are so very important to our world.

When God created man, He said “it is not good for the man to be alone”. Did God create another man for him? No, God created a woman who was the perfect suitable helper for him. God made a perfect matchup.

Gen 2:18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man."  24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. NIV

Eve…

Adam called her Eve…

Gen 3:20 Adam named his wife Eve , because she would become the mother of all the living. NIV

Eve was the first Mother and she was also the Mother of all the living. She was special, she was created by God. She was created as an adult, where as all females after her, had to start out as babies and then mature into adults.

All women after Eve were and are special and are also created by God. Although they have to be taught how to behave like girls, they have be taught how to be young ladies and then they are taught to be Mothers. Unfortunately not all young girls have that opportunity to be taught by their Mothers.

Sometimes Mothers make bad decisions and are caught up in their own problems they have caused and never get around to teaching their young daughters, leaving their young daughters to make decisions by themselves. Often to follow their Mother’s bad example leading to generations of tough upbringing and confusion.

But then there are those special Mothers that come around. The godly Mother. A young girl will have a dream of bringing up children in a godly home. A young girl who may have made mistakes in the past, but decides she is not going to stay that way. She turns to God to give her children the best chance they have to make it to heaven.

Mary…

We go to Mary as an example of a young girl who was interested in godly things, not the things of the world, but a future, not only for her but for the whole world.

Mary could have been just like the other girls of her time. You see, they all had the same opportunity that Mary had to make godly decisions. The prophet had prophesied that a young virgin would be with child and that child would be the savior of the world. All the young girls could have made it their goal to be pure, that maybe they could be the chosen one. Mary made that decision to be pure, to be godly and to prepare for the future. I thank God for Mary. I thank God for young women who dedicate their lives to serve God.

A good question to ask yourself is if everyone lived their life like I live mine, what kind of world would this be?  Which leads us to the question, if Mary would have decided to live her life to please herself, what kind of future would we have?

God needed someone to choose to live their life in purity and in godliness. Mary chose this and God used her in a tremendous way.

What about Today? People today, try and make the bible times and today as totally different, when they are not. There is still work to be done, and we still have God to count on.

There is nothing more beautiful than a godly woman.

Prov 31:30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. 31 Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. NIV

There are super models, there are models but their physical appearance is from God, but it is only temporary and often it actually cheats them out of life. Marilyn Monroe died a very lonely woman, because she was not a godly woman.

If a woman becomes a godly woman her inner beauty shines brighter than any physical beauty she will ever have. That craving for attention soon becomes satisfied by the attention that God gives her if she would only let Him.

The little girl that twirls and around in her dress, saying look at me, look at me, is the little girl who wants attention. When she grows up she can either look for it in a sinful way or she can look for it in God.  God says every little girl is beautiful, because He created her.

It is the devil who comes around who confuses the issue and says you are not beautiful, you need attention from everyone, except God. It soon becomes an unfulfilling aspiration.

A Godly Mother will teach her children they way to salvation

What can a Mother give to her children, which is more important than anything else? It is the hope of eternal life.

In the New Testament there was a young godly man who became a great friend of Apostle Paul. In fact Apostle Paul called him his son in the Lord. But this young godly man become a godly young man on his own, he had help and it came from an excellent source.

Timothy’s Sincere Faith came from…

2 Tim 1:3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. NIV

Timothy was blessed with a grandmother Lois who loved the Lord. A grandmother who had a sincere faith. She was godly and she was focused on God. This effort trickled down to her daughter Eunice who had Timothy as a son. Lois taught Eunice how to be godly and it became her way of life. And when she had Timothy as a son, she taught him when he was a little baby to love God. She gave him every opportunity to be successful in Christianity.

2 Tim 3:14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. NIV

What a blessing for little Timothy to be raised in the Lord, to have an opportunity to live for God!

How did Eunice teach Timothy? She probably introduced things to Timothy as he matured.

Believe: Mark 16:15 He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. NIV

Eunice probably taught Timothy to believe in Jesus Christ. How important Jesus was. How God so loved Timothy that He died on the cross for his sins.

Eunice had to teach Timothy what was a sin. A sin in simple terms is disobedience to God.

Repent:  Acts 2:38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. NIV

Being that Timothy was raised by a godly mother, he had to be explained, that when you sin, you need to turn from your wicked ways and turn to God, that is repentance.

Confess: 1 Tim 6:12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. NIV

Acts 8:36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?" 37 Then Philip said,"If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said,"I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."  38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. NKJV

Baptism: 1 Peter 3:21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also-not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, NIV

Rom 6:4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. NIV

Live a godly life: 1 Peter 1:15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." NIV

 

Theme: Live To Please God

Hastings Morning‑ May 2, 1010

Text:  1Thes 4:1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in

fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and

more. (NIV)

 

Introduction: Whenever someone does something good for you, it is only natural for you

to do something that pleases him back.  When a husband loves his wife, he wants to

please her, when a wife loves her husband she wants to please him. Employees often

work at pleasing their bosses, because they know if they please their boss, there may be a

raise or a bonus in the future.

Today I want to talk about pleasing God Almighty, He is our Creator, He is our

Heavenly Father.

 

He is the Loving Father...

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever

believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (NIV)

God is so special in that he loved a world that did not love Him. He was willing to send his Son, even though Jesus would be mistreated and spat upon. God wanted the world not to perish, but to have eternal life.

 

He is the Patient Father...

2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He

is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. (NIV)

God has been patient, every day He has been patient with me as I sin and do things that may embarrass him. I am amazed by God for His incredible patience with the world, how wicked and how they are against Him in so many ways. Yet He does not want anyone to perish, so He has not sent His Son to come back yet. Why? so the world can have a little more time to get right.

 

He is the Caring Father...

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. NIV

Many Fathers do not care about their children, they do not provide for them, nor do they spend time with their children. But God is different, God wants to hear about the trials you go through, He wants to hear about the struggles and the disappointments in your life. He wants to hear of the injustices and the hurts. He wants to hear about the things that saddened you. God wants you to give Him everything, because he truly cares for you.

 

God is the Friend of those who obey...

James 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend. 24 You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. NIV

Everyone needs a friend. It doesn=t matter if it is the loner on a mountain or president of the United States everyone needs a friend. No one needs a friend who betrays or who cannot be trusted, but a friend that will be there in times of need and in times of plenty. God is the Friend of those who are obedient to Him. God is the best friend, loving, patient and caring.

 

God is a Protecting Father...

Ps 34:7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. 8 Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. 9 Fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing. 10 The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. NIV

One who lives to please God has protection from God. In Afghanistan, there was a lion in the zoo, who in the early 1990's was mistreated. A Taliban fighter had climbed into its cage to tease it, and it killed the Taliban, so the next day the brother to the Taliban fighter tossed a hand grenade near the lion and the lion lost and eye and some teeth. The lion was hurt bad enough that they had to grind up meat for the lion, cause it could not chew very well. Throughout its life it was being teased and then finally yesterday it died. King David says that lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

God has been good to us, even though we get discontent with we have, we think we should have better, if we are truthful we would have to say, we lack no good thing.

 

When a young lady is looking for a husband, she needs to be certain that this man has these godly characteristics, because they will be very important in raising their children and having a wonderful Christian marriage.

 

When someone is special, we want to do everything, we can to please that

someone. God is special and He deserves to be given special treatment. Better treatment

than anyone here on earth, better treatment than any material or living animal on earth.

God did not have to send His Son to die on the cross for our sins. He could have

created perfect human beings and destroyed us all. Yet He chose to provide us with a plan of salvation, He chose to send His Son to die on the cross in our place. He deserves to be pleased.

 

PROPOSITION: HOW CAN WE PLEASE GOD?

 

1. PLEASES GOD ALL THE TIME.


It is a blessing to see married couples, who prefer their spouse over anyone else as a companion. It is supposed to be that way. It is supposed to be that one spouse desires to be around their spouse more than anyone else. But it doesn=t always happen that way. When two are getting along real well and want to do everything to please one another, then you have a solid relationship. When a couple is known for wanting to please one another, it is a rare and it is good. The same way it is with wanting to do everything we can in pleasing God.

I am not saying we should broadcast that we are working to please God. But that

our actions should show others that we want to please God.

 

We should do this in a humble way...

 

PARABLE OF THE PHARISEE AND THE TAX COLLECTOR

 

Luke 18:9‑14

9          To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on

everybody else, Jesus told this parable:

10        "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax

collector.

11        The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am

not like other men‑‑ robbers, evildoers, adulterers‑‑ or even like this tax collector.

12        I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'

13        "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven,

but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'

14        "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be

exalted." (NIV)

 

Jesus was not happy with the Pharisee, for in verse 14

14        "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be

exalted."

It is important that we want to please God in a humble manner. Not comparing

ourselves with others, but in a humble attitude pleasing God.

 

Alex Haley, the author of ROOTS, has a picture in his office, showing a turtle sitting atop a fence. The picture is there to remind him of a lesson he learned long ago: 'If you see a turtle on a fence post, you know he had some help.' "Says Alex, 'Any time I start thinking, WOW, ISN'T THIS MARVELOUS WHAT I'VE DONE! I look at that picture and remember how this turtle‑‑me‑‑got up on that post.'" Sandy Reynolds

 

We are like that turtle, our lives wouldn=t be where they are unless someone put is there. God has picked us off the ground of sin and gently set us down on the fence post.

 

ENOCH‑

Heb 11:5

5          By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he

could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was

commended as one who pleased God. (NIV)


Strong's- pleased

2100  euaresteo (yoo‑ar‑es‑teh'‑o);

from 2101; to gratify entirely:

KJV‑‑ please (well).

 

The idea is that Enoch pleased God in everything. He wasn't just strong in certain

areas of his life, but his entire life pleased God.

We ought to be like Enoch, for He was commended as one who pleased God. He

lived his life in such a way that it pleased God. His life was a testimony for pleasing God.

Enoch had faith in God, and his life was pleasing to God. Imagine he did not even

have to experience death, God took him away. What a reward for pleasing God.

 

Heb 11:5

5          Enoch trusted God too, and that is why God took him away to heaven without

dying; suddenly he was gone because God took him. Before this happened God had

said how pleased he was with Enoch. (TLB)

 

We need to desire to be like Enoch, who was known as a person who pleased

God. Everyone around knew he was a God fearing person. He was a God pleaser!

If we show others an example of pleasing God, it will be a testimony to them. The

way you live your life, is important to those you witness too. A person with a life that

doesn't please God, will be a terrible witness. A person who is an example is a great

witness.

People should know where you are going to be on Sundays and Wednesday, you are going to worship God.

 

Micah- Before we talk about this Biblical Character I do want to inform you this is not the same Micah who wrote the book of Micah. This one lived around 700 years before the prophet Micah.

 

An example of someone who wanted to please God on his own terms and still get the blessings.

 

Judg 17:1‑13

1          Now a man named Micah from the hill country of Ephraim

2          said to his mother, "The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from you and about which I heard you utter a curse‑‑ I have that silver with me; I took it." Then his mother said, "The LORD bless you, my son!"

3          When he returned the eleven hundred shekels of silver to his mother, she said, "I solemnly consecrate my silver to the LORD for my son to make a carved image and a cast idol. I will give it back to you."

4          So he returned the silver to his mother, and she took two hundred shekels of silver and gave them to a silversmith, who made them into the image and the idol. And they were put in Micah's house.


5          Now this man Micah had a shrine, and he made an ephod and some idols and installed one of his sons as his priest.

6          In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.

7          A young Levite from Bethlehem in Judah, who had been living within the clan of Judah,

8          left that town in search of some other place to stay. On his way he came to Micah's house in the hill country of Ephraim.

9          Micah asked him, "Where are you from?" "I'm a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah," he said, "and I'm looking for a place to stay."

10        Then Micah said to him, "Live with me and be my father and priest, and I'll give you ten shekels of silver a year, your clothes and your food."

11        So the Levite agreed to live with him, and the young man was to him like one of his sons.

12        Then Micah installed the Levite, and the young man became his priest and lived in his house.

13        And Micah said, "Now I know that the LORD will be good to me, since this Levite has become my priest." (NIV)

Now was this really pleasing God?

 

Micah lived under the Old Testament Law... He knew it was wrong to have idols, yet he figured if he convinced a priest to be his priest he would be all right.

Exod 20:3‑5

3          "You shall have no other gods before me.

4          "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

5          You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, (NIV)

But just because a person gets someone to agree with them, and in this case he even bought his services, is it right? Is it pleasing God?

It reminds me of what Apostle Paul told Timothy about the time when men will suit their own desires and gather teachers who say what their itching ears want to hear. They want to go to church, they want to serve God, but only on their terms.    

2 Tim 4:3

3          For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. (NIV)

We should not try and please God on our own terms. But we should be like Enoch who pleased God entirely.

 

A HUMBLE WITNESS IS A POWERFUL WITNESS‑

In the summer of 1986, two ships collided in the Black Sea off the coast of Russia. Hundreds of

passengers died as they were hurled into the icy waters below. News of the disaster was further


darkened when an investigation revealed the cause of the accident. It wasn't a technology problem like radar malfunction‑‑or even thick fog. The cause was human stubbornness. Each captain was aware of the other ship's presence nearby. Both could have steered clear, but according to news reports, neither captain wanted to give way to the other. Each was too proud to yield first. By the time they came to their senses, it was too late. Closer Walk, December, 1991

 

1 Pet 3:1

1          Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them

do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their

wives, (NIV)

If the wife, follows God's commands and does what pleases God, she can be an

effective witness for God. The example that Apostle Peter is talking about, with the wife

being in submission to her husband who isn't a christian gives here an excellent opportunity

to lead him to Christ.

The opposite of course is that if a wife is not submissive then the husband will not

be converted to Christ.

It is the responsibility of the Christian to set the example for those who aren't

Christians. By our humble example people can be won over to Christ.

Being that we are not perfect, by our humility and honesty we can still lead others to Christ. This is truly pleasing to God.

Many years ago, Christian professor Stuart Blackie of the University of Edinburgh was listening to his students as they presented oral readings. When one young man rose to begin his recitation, he held his book in the wrong hand. The professor thundered, "Take your book in your right hand, and be seated!" At this harsh rebuke, the student held up his right arm. He didn't have a right hand! The other students shifted uneasily in their chairs. For a moment the professor hesitated. Then he made his way to the student, put his arm around him, and with tears streaming from his eyes, said, "I never knew about it. Please, will you forgive me?" His humble apology made a lasting impact on that young man. This story was told some time later in a large gathering of believers. At the close of the meeting a man came forward, turned to the crowd, and raised his right arm. It ended at the wrist. He said, "I was that student. Professor Blackie led me to Christ. But he never could have done it if he had not made the wrong right."

Are you living a life that will lead someone to Christ? Or is your life the excuse

people are looking for, why they shouldn't become Christians?

 

2. PLEASE GOD, NOT MEN

Some people only want to work as pleasing to God if they have a crowd or credit.

During the American Revolution a man in civilian clothes rode past a group of soldiers repariing a small defensive barrier. their leader was shouting instructions, but making no attempt to help them. Asked why by the rider, he retorted with great dignity, "Sir, I am a corporal!" The stranger apologized, dismounted, and proceeded to help the exhausted soldiers. The job done, he turned to the corporal and said, "Mr. Corporal, next time you have a job like this and not enough men to do it, go to your commander‑in‑chief, and I will come and help you again." It was none other than George Washington.     

 

One way to please God, is by pleasing God before men. Putting God before


anyone else in your life.

 

THE APOSTLES EXAMPLE

Acts 5:29

29        Peter and the other apostles replied: "We must obey God rather than men! (NIV)

 

The Apostles were God‑pleasers, they did this when they were being persecuted.

The Sanhedrin, which were the religious people of the day. They threatened the Apostles

and told them not to talk about Jesus. But that did not stop the Apostles. They said to the

religious people of that day.

"We must obey God rather than men!@

The Apostles were not going to please men, they were going to please God first.

God wanted them to spread the Word. But the Sanhedrin did not want them too. What

were they going to do about it? Would they rather keep quiet and get released and not

punished or would they rather please God and be mistreated?

The Apostles made the decision, they are going to please God, rather than men.

Acts 5:40‑42

40        His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged.

Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41        The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted

worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.

42        Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped

teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. (NIV)

The Sanhedrin ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus. The Apostles

made the decision that they were not going to keep quiet about Jesus.

Have we decided to please men, or are we pleasing God in witnessing to others?

Many People do not want to hear about Jesus Christ, they don't want to hear about their

sins.

Would you rather please them or do you want to please God?

 

The Apostles were so happy because they pleased God. They were counted worthy of

suffering disgrace for the name!

When was the last time, you were happy because someone mistreated you because

of your stand for Jesus.

We need to get to the maturity level the Apostles were in. They were very pleased

for suffering for the Lord. They were rejoicing because they pleased God.

Maybe we are unhappy, because we haven't done anything to please God

recently!

Maybe we feel guilty because our example isn't what it should be!

 

Spread The Word Of God‑ The only way people are going to hear about Jesus is

through us, sharing the Word with them. Let us be like the Apostles and spread the word

of God, from house to house, from friend to friend, from neighbor to neighbor.


In North Platte there is a couple who got together, because they were next door

neighbors. The man was a Christian, and he witnessed to his neighbor, who became a

Christian and now they are married. All because the Christian man wanted to please God

and spread the word.

 

MOSES

Heb 11:24‑26

24        By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of

Pharaoh's daughter.

25        He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the

pleasures of sin for a short time.

26        He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the

treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. (NIV)

 

(1.) he refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; she had adopted him for

his son, and he refused it. Observe,

[1.] How great a temptation Moses was under. Pharaoh's daughter is said to have

been his only child, and was herself childless; and having found Moses, and saved him as

she did, she resolved to take him and bring him up as her son; and so he stood fair to be

in time king of Egypt, and he might thereby have been serviceable to Israel. He owed his

life to this princess; and to refuse such kindness from her would look not only like

ingratitude to her, but a neglect of Providence, that seemed to intend his advancement and

his brethren's advantage.

[2.] how glorious was the triumph of his faith in so great a trial. He refused to be

called the son of Pharaoh's daughter lest he should undervalue the truer honour of being a

son of Abraham, the father of the faithful; he refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's

daughter lest it should look like renouncing his religion as well as his relation to Israel;

and no doubt both these he must have done if he had accepted this honour; he therefore

nobly refused it.

(2.) he chose rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the

pleasures of sin for a season, v. 25. He was willing to take his lot with the people of God

here, though it was a suffering lot, that he might have his portion with them hereafter,

rather than to enjoy all the sensual sinful pleasures of Pharaoh's court, which would be

but for a season, and would then be punished with everlasting misery. Herein he acted

rationally as well as religiously, and conquered the temptation to worldly pleasure as he

had done before to worldly preferment. Here observe,

[1.] The pleasures of sin are and will be but short; they must end in speedy

repentance or in speedy ruin.

[2.] the pleasures of this world, and especially those of a court, are too often the

pleasures of sin; and they are always so when we cannot enjoy them without deserting

God and his people. A true believer will despise them when they are offered upon such

terms.

(3.) he accounted the reproaches of Christ greater riches than the treasures of


Egypt, v. 26. See how Moses weighed matters: in one scale he put the worst of religion‑‑

the reproaches of Christ, in the other scale the best of the world‑‑ the treasures of Egypt;

and in his judgment, directed by faith, the worst of religion weighed down the best of the

world. Now here Moses conquered the riches of the world, as before he had conquered its

honours and pleasures. God's people are, and always have been, a reproached people.

Moses had it made, as far as material possessions were concerned. Moses was

adopted by the Pharaoh's daughter when he was real young. He was raised in royalty, he

had everything he wanted. He was royalty in the greatest nation in the world at the time.

He could have lived like a king literally. He had servants, he was waited on hand and

foot! He was rich, he had the best chariot, he had a beautiful palace to live in.

But the Word of God says he refused to be known as the Pharoah's daughter.

He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy

pleasures of sin for a short time.

The pleasures of sin did not allure him away from God. If we are to please God,

we must show God that He is number one in our lfe.

There were all kinds of benefits for being a son of the Pharaoh's daughter, but one

of the problems was there was too much sin available. It wasn't worth it for Moses. Even

the Word of God says there is pleasure in sin, it is not worth it. Moses had a big

opportunity to have any material possession he wanted, but Moses choose God instead.

He wanted to please God, rather than please himself. The pleasures of Sin was not worth

salvation. He rather please God, than please himself with the pleasures of sin.

Are we living our life pleasing God or are we pleasing ourselves?

 

Here is the key...

Heb 11:26

26        He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the

treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. (NIV)

 

Moses was looking ahead to his reward. We need to look ahead to our reward, and

give up the pleasures of sins, and please God.

King Tut a Pharoah of Egypt, when they found his tomb, he had several thousand

pounds of gold in his tomb. Imagine the treasures, Moses could have had.

Mose thought of that as earthly, temporary, his prize was going to be everlasting.

He rather please God and get the best prize.

Moses understood what it means to please God rather than go for the temporary.

The Psalmists put it this way...

Ps 37:16

16        Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked; (NIV)

 

Apostle Peter put it this way...

1 Pet 4:14


14        If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit

of glory and of God rests on you. (NIV)

 

Are we looking at only the temporary to please ourselves? Or are we looking at

eternity and want to please God?

Are you willing to give up the lure of the pleasures of life and pursue pleasing

God? Moses understood that the material things of this world, do not compare with the

riches of eternal life.

 

3. DO GO0D AND SHARE WITH OTHERS

 

Heb 13:16

16        And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices

God is pleased. (NIV)

 

Heb 13:16

16        Don't forget to do good and to share what you have with those in need, for such

sacrifices are very pleasing to him. (TLB)

 

Matthew Henry Commentary

Hebrews 13:1‑17  PP44

God is well pleased; he will accept the offering with pleasure, and will accept and bless

the offers through Christ.

 

Apostle Paul reminds us not to forget to do good and to share with others. We

often forget that we not only should praise God, but we are to do good to others.

We are prone to think only of our own interests. When our duty is to please God,

by doing good and sharing with those in need. 

 

The Christians from Philipi gave to Apostle Paul                  

 

Phil 4:10‑19

10        I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have renewed your concern for me.

Indeed, you have been concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it.

11        I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content

whatever the circumstances.

12        I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have

learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or

hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

13        I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

14        Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles.

15        Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with

the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the


matter of giving and receiving, except you only;

16        for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid again and again when I

was in need.

17        Not that I am looking for a gift, but I am looking for what may be credited to

your account.

18        I have received full payment and even more; I am amply supplied, now that I

have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an

acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.

19        And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ

Jesus. (NIV)

Apostle Paul had a need, and the church in Philippi provided for that need. When

no other church was giving to him, the Philippians were. Even though Apostle Paul was

one who was content in all circumstances, the Philippians still provided. Sometimes

people will judge other Christians, and think they should be satisfied with what they have

so therefore they will not help. They think, they need to know what it means to lack. But

Apostle Paul had his desires under control, and the church in Philippi sent to him anyway.

Besides if we keep from helping others, we are not giving a fragrant offering, an

acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.

 

APOSTLE PAUL TELLS THE CHRISTIANS...

Heb 6:10‑11

10        God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown

him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.

11        We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to

make your hope sure. (NIV)

He reminds them that God is a God who remembers the love we show Him. How

do we show Him we love Him? By helping Christians. Apostle Paul reminds the

Christians to continue to help others until the very end. Why to make their hope sure...

 

Heb 6:10‑11

10        For God is not unfair. How can he forget your hard work for him, or forget the

way you used to show your love for him‑‑ and still do‑‑ by helping his children?

11        And we are anxious that you keep right on loving others as long as life lasts, so

that you will get your full reward. (TLB)

 

DO GOOD TO ALL PEOPLE

Gal 6:10

10        Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to

those who belong to the family of believers.(NIV)

 

DO GOOD TO YOUR ENEMIES TOO!

Luke 6:31‑35

31        Do to others as you would have them do to you.


32        "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love

those who love them.

33        And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you?

Even 'sinners' do that.

34        And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to

you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full.

35        But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to

get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most

High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. (NIV)

 

BY DOING GOOD TO ALL PEOPLE YOU MAY ENTERTAIN ANGELS

Heb 13:1‑2

1          Keep on loving each other as brothers.

2          Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have

entertained angels without knowing it. (NIV)

 

TABITHA

Acts 9:36‑40

36        In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which, when translated, is

Dorcas), who was always doing good and helping the poor.

37        About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed

in an upstairs room.

38        Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda,

they sent two men to him and urged him, "Please come at once!"

39        Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room.

All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing

that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.

40        Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed.

Turning toward the dead woman, he said, "Tabitha, get up." She opened her eyes, and

seeing Peter she sat up. (NIV)

 

TO ACT JUSTLY AND TO LOVE MERCY

Micah 6:7‑8

7          Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of

oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of

my soul?

8          He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of

you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

Theme: Do You Love Jesus?

Text: John 14:15    "If you love me, you will obey what I command."
Introduction:  In life we have expectations, how we want to be treated, how we want to be loved. Sometimes we are not treated like we want to be treated and sometimes we are not loved like we want to be loved. We don’t feel the best when we feel mistreated or unloved. But what does Jesus feel like when He is mistreated or unloved?
What if everyone treated Jesus like they wanted to treat Jesus? What if everyone loved Jesus like they wanted to love Jesus? Wouldn’t Jesus feel cheated?
    You see Jesus already has expectations of us. After all He created us. Some people think in their mind how they are to treat Jesus. Instead of going to the Holy Scriptures to find out how Jesus wants to be treated and loved.
    If we all just thought and gave our opinion how Jesus is to be loved, we would have a million different opinions and answers.
    Do you love Jesus? This question if asked, many would answer yes. Many will say I love Jesus, but if you asked them to demonstrate their love for Jesus, they may get offended and reply Jesus knows I love Him. Or does He?
You may see the athletes bow their knees and pray to God. But does that mean they love Jesus. Praying is definitely recommended, but does that mean that you love Jesus.
Just like if I gave my wife a beautiful card that said all the right things but mistreated her 95% of the time, would that be love? To a person looking from the outside, they would say, oh how sweet, he gave his wife a loving card. But if they only knew I mistreated her 95 percent of the time, they would say, that is not love.
In the American language the word love, has so many definitions. Sometimes it is used as liking someone, sometimes it is used as lusting after something or someone. But what is the meaning of love that is talked about in (John 14:15).
Being that the word love was written originally written in the Greek. Let us find out what Jesus really meant by this word.

The Greek word is Agapete-
VINE'S EXPOSITORY DICTIONARY-
Christian love has God for it's primary object, and expresses itself first of all in implicit obedience to His Commandments. Self-will, that is, self-pleasing, is the negation of love to God.
If you disobey His commandments, you do not love Jesus.

NEW INTERNATIONAL STUDY BIBLE-
Love... obey. Love, like Faith (James 2:14-26), cannot be separated from obedience.
Love has to have action, behind it.
James 2:14 26
14    What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?
15    Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.
16    If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?
17    In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
18    But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
19    You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that   and shudder.
20    You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?
21    Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
22    You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.
23    And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend.
24    You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.
25    In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?

Keeping His Commandments, "This is the only proper evidence of love to Jesus, for mere profession is no proof of love: but that love for Him which leads us to do all His will, to love each other, to deny ourselves, to take up our cross, and to follow Him through evil report and through good report, is true attachment.
The evidence which we have that a child loves its parents is when that child is willing, without hesitation, gainsaying, or murmuring, to do all that the parent requires him to do.
So the disciples (followers) of Christ are required to show that they are attached to Him supremely by yielding to all His requirements, and by patiently doing His will in the face of ridicule and opposition."
The proof that you love Jesus is to obey His commands.
From these definitions can you honestly say "You love Jesus".
The devil has thrown his fiery dirts at humans for along time, he has told us that you can say you love Jesus yet not do anything about it.
But Jesus says "If you love me, you will obey what I command."
Jesus wants us to show Him we love Him through our obedience to Him.
Have you been showing Jesus you love Him?

I. WHY WE SHOULD LOVE JESUS?
1. Because He Loved us First.
I Jn 4:19 We love because he first loved us. (NIV)
This is speaking about God but it can be interchanged with Jesus because of...
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

It says that the Logos was God. And the Logos is Jesus.
Jesus loved us first. He knew by loving us, would cause a terrible event for him to have to go through and that was to die on the cross. By getting involved in trying to save us, He was going to have to lose his life. He counted the cost and understood what it meant to love us, and He came down from the beautiful place called heaven, to die and ugly, slow death, to demonstrate His love for us.

 
a.    JESUS DIED FOR US, WHILE WE WERE STILL SINNERS.                     

Rom 5:6 8
6    You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.
7    Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die.
 
8    But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (NIV)
We had nothing to do with Him loving us. He loved us while we were still sinners. He had an amazing love for us, before we did anything for Him He loved us. Sometimes I look at my life and ask Jesus how can you love me? But He did!
That is why He came down from Heaven to live a perfect life so that He could be the perfect sacrifice that was necessary for our Salvation.
It was Jesus demonstration of His love for us. Coming down to be sacrificed for us.       He is actually going to save those who love Him. Jesus demonstrated his love to us by coming down to earth and by making Himself nothing, being made in human likeness.
Phil 2:6 8
6    Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7    but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8    And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death   even death on a cross! (NIV)
There was no reason for Him to lower Himself to be lowered to our level. There was no reason for Him to be Sacrificed in our place. Other than that He loved us.

    2. WE SHOULD LOVE JESUS BECAUSE HE DEMONSTRATED THE GREATEST LOVE TO US.

John 15:13
13    Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. (NIV)
I Jn 3:16
16    This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. (NIV)
 
He not only defined the greatest love, but He fulfilled it. And it was a demonstration of love for us. He died for us. He died in our place. So that we won't have to go to Hell.  We did not deserve His love, but He gave it to us anyway. Imagine how much love it took to be beaten, battered, spit upon, mocked and crucified to do all this in the place of someone else. Jesus went through all that and more because He loved us.
When someone shows us love, we automatically return the love for them. It is easy to love that person. We will go out of the way for that person. Jesus loved us with the Greatest love, why can't we show Him that we love Him?

II. HOW CAN WE SHOW JESUS THAT WE LOVE HIM?
a.Through Obedience-
"If you love me, you will obey what I command." John 14:15
We show our love for Jesus, through our obedience to Him.
Let us go and obey Jesus and not break His commandments. Loving Jesus means obeying Jesus. We need to be put our love for Jesus into action.
 
A Husband shows his wife he loves her, not by just telling her he loves her but by being kind, considerate and loyal. If your wife would tell you she loves you, yet never treat you like she loves you, what would you think about that?
Yet why is it that we tell Jesus we love Him yet sometimes, we don't put it into practice? Jesus also says..."You are my friends if you do what I command." (John 15:10)
In order for us to demonstrate our love for Jesus and our friendship with Jesus we need to obey Him.
Are you obeying all His commands? Or do you know of some that you are not obeying?

b. We need a Complete Obedience to Jesus!
James 2:10
10    For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. (NIV)
We need to demonstrate our love for Jesus in all areas of our life. We need to put Him first in all our decisions. He should be on top of our priority list.
We should not stumble in any point because if you deliberately stumble in one you are guilty of breaking it all. Jesus wants our undivided love, we should not have any reservations for any sin.  Not a half-hearted love where that we will love Jesus in some areas and others not.
Get away from sin. It breaks up our relationship with Jesus.
I Jn 3:8 9
8    He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work.
9    No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. (NIV)
(I John 3:8)
When we are tempted to sin we need to ask ourself is this worth losing my love for Jesus?
I. We know we need to love Jesus, because He loves us.
II. We know we need to show Jesus our Love by obeying Him.
III. What Should We Do?
1. If you are not a Christian-
You need to follow Jesus plan of Salvation.
Jesus told His Apostles just before He went to be with God. He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." (Mark 16:16)
And in "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
(Matthew 28:19,20)
So that is exactly what they did. They went to Jerusalem and Peter was preaching a sermon and the people got convicted. They felt bad that they had killed Jesus. They felt bad they had went against Jesus. So they replied...
What shall we do?
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, everyone of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:37-38)
"Those who accepted his message were baptized..."     (Acts 2:41)
 
Here is another example what you need to do.
Ethiopian Eunuch- (Acts 8:35-39)
After hearing Philip's explanation...
They stopped at a place where there was water and the Eunuch confessed that Jesus is the Son of God and then was baptized.

1. If you are not a Christian you need to believe that Jesus is the Son of God.                  (Mark 16:16)
2. You need to Repent  of all your past sins. (Which means to feel sorry for and to turn away from those sins).  (Acts 2:38)
3. You need to Confess that "Jesus is the Son of God". (Acts 8:37)
4. You need to be Baptized  for the forgiveness of your sins and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38, Mark 16;16)
5. Then you need to live a godly life. (Romans 6:1-4) (Hebrews 10:26-27)

Text: Heb 12:28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our "God is a consuming fire." NIV

Introduction:

1.    Worship Is Giving Up Everything…

During the Patriarchal Period…
Abraham was a man of God who lived during the Patriarchal period, which simply means before the Ten Commandments were given. During this time period, the Father’s were given the responsibility to bring forth sacrifices to God.

Abraham used the word Worship as a
Gen 22:5 He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you." NIV

This story was when God tested Abraham’s faith. God wanted to know if He was more important than anyone else or anything in the world. So He told Abraham to sacrifice his son. His son Isaac was special to Abraham. It was the son that God had promised to him when Sarah laughed. It was the son by which Jesus Christ would some day be born.
Who was Abraham going to choose? Was it God or was it going to be Isaac?

Abraham told his servants he was going to worship. He was going to prostrate himself in homage to God. Imagine how hard that must have been walking toward the place to sacrifice Isaac, and then when Isaac asked where the lamb was.

Gen 22:6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?"  "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together. NIV

    Abraham said God would provide. Meanwhile Abraham knew that it was Isaac who was supposed to be the sacrifice. What was worship to Abraham? It meant he was going to pledge his allegiance to God, to humble himself before him, and no one was going to be between him and God.
    Abraham believed that God would provide a lamb for the burnt offering. But he loved and respected God so much, he thought that after killing Isaac, God would resurrect him.

Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned."   19 Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death. NIV

Before this and after this, God had never commanded anyone to kill their son as a sacrifice, this was the first time.
Yet God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son as a sacrifice for our sins. What did it prove? It proved God’s commitment to saving lost souls.

What did Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice Isaac prove? It proved that in worship nothing was going to come between God and him.

Abraham knew all the promises which were supposed to come through Isaac, He knew that Isaac was a gift from God, but he also knew even though he didn’t quite understand what God was doing, he was going to obey and worship Him.

Abraham thought God was going to provide with a resurrection of Isaac, when actually God did something different.

Gen 22:10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
11 But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!"
"Here I am," he replied.
12 "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."
13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided." 15 The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16 and said, "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me." NIV

What can we learn from this? When we worship God, we are to put God first in our life before anyone or anything. We are to put our lives in His hands and let God bless us for this.
The angel of the Lord said because he did not withheld his son, his only son, he would be surely blessed.
I believe the reason we are not truly blessed is because we have withheld things from God, we have allowed our family or our friends or activities or sin to be more important in our life than God.
When Abraham went to Worship pay homage to God, to bow down to God. He laid everything before God, did not hold anything back. Are you willing to do that?

2.    How Important Is Worship?
Worship is so important God wanted His son Israel to worship Him so bad, that he sent ten plagues to get Israel out of Egypt.

Ex 4:21 The LORD said to Moses, "When you return to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders I have given you the power to do. But I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go. 22 Then say to Pharaoh, 'This is what the LORD says: Israel is my firstborn son, 23 and I told you, "Let my son go, so he may worship me." But you refused to let him go; so I will kill your firstborn son.'" NIV

    In fact God was so angry with Pharaoh, since Pharaoh would not allow God’s son to worship Him, God took Pharaoh’s firstborn son.
    God has a craving for Worship and He desires it deeply.

When the disciples of Christ were singing praises to God, the people tried to stop them. What did Jesus say.

Luke 19:37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 38 "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!" 40 "I tell you," he replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out ." NIV

    Worship is so important if it is not done by the disciples the stones would cry out and worship.

    God wants to be worshipped without sharing being number one in someone’s life.

James 4:4 You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely?  NIV

    God wants to be number one in our life and He wants us to worship Him and Him only.
The Holy Spirit intensely craves our worship.

James 4:5 What do you think the Scriptures mean when they say that the Holy Spirit, whom God has placed within us, jealously longs for us to be faithful? 6 He gives us more and more strength to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say, "God sets himself against the proud,
but he shows favor to the humble." NLT

When we live in a spirit of worship all the time, we are more aware that God is watching. We know when we hurt Him, We know when we disappoint Jesus.

Luke 22:54-62
54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him."
57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said.
58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them."
"Man, I am not!" Peter replied.
59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean."
60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times."  62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. NIV

    I want Jesus not to have to look at me with a disappointed look. I want Jesus to be standing like He stood for Stephen.

Acts 7:56 "Look," he said, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." NIV

3.    Did God want Instruments in Worship?
1 Chron 23:4 David said, "Of these, twenty-four thousand are to supervise the work of the temple of the LORD and six thousand are to be officials and judges. 5 Four thousand are to be gatekeepers and four thousand are to praise the LORD with the musical instruments I have provided for that purpose." NIV

    In the temple of the Lord were four thousand people who praised God with musical instruments. Imagine how loud and powerful that must have been.

In fact this was commanded by God.
2 Chron 29:25 He stationed the Levites in the temple of the LORD with cymbals, harps and lyres in the way prescribed by David and Gad the king's seer and Nathan the prophet; this was commanded by the LORD through his prophets. NIV

The NIV even goes so far as call the instruments the Lord’s instruments of praise.
2 Chron 30:21 The Israelites who were present in Jerusalem celebrated the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days with great rejoicing, while the Levites and priests sang to the LORD every day, accompanied by the LORD's instruments of praise. NIV

The NASB calls them loud instruments to the Lord.
2 Chron 30:21 And the sons of Israel present in Jerusalem celebrated the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days with great joy, and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD day after day with loud instruments to the LORD. NASB

    How exciting it must have been to be in the temple worshipping God!

Ps 66:1 Shout with joy to God, all the earth! 2 Sing the glory of his name;
make his praise glorious! NIV

What volume are you supposed to worship God.  According to the Hebrew it says to figuratively split the ears. Like a loud alarm.

    What about the New Testament, what is great about the New Testament, there is no scripture that condemns or does away with the instrumental music in the Church services.
    With every sacrifice, with every festival or special day there has been a scripture in the New Testament that has put an end to them. But with instrumental music, God has allowed it to continue on.

In fact James the brother of Jesus, said if anyone was happy, they should sing songs of praise.    
James 5:13 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. NIV

And the Greek word is psallo, which means to sing accompanied with a stringed instrument.

    I am actually really excited about listening to the last instrument played during human existence on earth, the trumpet.

1 Cor 15:51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed- 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet . For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. NIV

4.    How to Worship… Worship With Reverance and Awe

When we worship God it should be with Reverance and Awe. Utmost respect and honor. When we worship God it is all about God, not ourselves.
